I tend to concentrate on trained dogs for the Police, Personal Protection or Sports but obviously they all originate from somewhere.

We arent going to get another dog just yet as we are due a baby any time now (mrs is currently being induced) so we are looking at a few months minimum.
We are thinking along the lines of a border collie, weinereimer (sp), labrador (chocolate or black, although I think they have too many health issues), english springer (my fave dogs), and a gsd (long haired variety). We will want a puppy that are known to have good tempraments with young children, and that will grow up with our baby once he arrives

Don't do it! Bonkers dogs. Okay if you have a lot of time to spend with them and train them plus being able to take them walking for several miles each day. Otherwise they'll drive you insane. A lot of them have their own mental issues too.
Don't get me wrong I love Border Collies but they take some serious commitment.

If you are a) calling the breed Alsations and b) seriously seeking the opinion of the greater scoobynet membership, then you are enquiring about the wrong breed of dog, IMO.
DCI, you may be better off with one of these

The other breeds I could make enquiries about if you were set on one in particular. I'm always willing to help but as I've spent sometime in the past with others giving specific advice about a dogs sex and lines only for it to be completely ignored and then have to read somewhere that they are surprised their dog is how it is, it kind of makes me not want to help anybody. The problem with that however is I'd hate you to buy some excuse of a GSD with no pedigree and line the pockets of the 'free paper' breeders.
Let me know and good luck with the baby.

I'm still looking to buy a GSD/Alsation and thanks for the PM's all..... I'm looking at relocating my office to my primary residence so I'll have lots of time to devote to a new companion
Money is no option, but I don't need a trained security hound as I'd only end up setting it on myself anyway
So how much am I looking at ?? £1000+ and what should I get... male or female??

The GSD shouldn't be a problem if and when you are ready, subject to a litter being available right at that point. For a pet and with a baby around you won't be wanting anything too 'drivey', just a super companion.

Ive read some of the threads in the past where you have helped and then people have disregarded your advice and then started complaining/moaning. I must admit is was on your advice that I switched to the arden grange range which was a massive improvement

If you want a GSD to look the part then go for a male every time, few females usually with the exception of some of the East German, Czech etc dogs feature the manly look and build of a male. What exactly do you want him for? £600 will get you a puppy, £1000-£1,500 will get you a basic trained companion dog, £3-5,000 will get you a Protection dog that will always need ongoing training in real life situations. There are then the companion dogs in between, for various reasons, and sometimes excellent value, say between £750 - £1000 for a part trained dog.
If your dealer isn't after you yet you won't be needing a PP dog, a puppy would be hard work (especially a high drive line), so I'd say a dog older than circa 12 months with a degree of obedience training on it. I know of quite a few AND one nice 11 month old male returned to the breeders due to the previous owners circumstances changing.
Do you like the West German look (Black and red) or the DDR look (Dark grey). Short or long coated?
