too much Privet

too much Privet
all the houses in my street have privet hedging at the front of the houses. i have been cutting it for about 20 years now and want a change. i would like to take down the hedge between my and a neighbour, they surround the whole garden, but i dont think they would say 'yes'
if my neighbour says they are happy with the hedge can i go over their heads? i want to replace the hedge with an attractive maintenance free wall
they rarely cut their hedge so when i cut my side it looks horrible, mine is 5ft on my side, theirs is around 8ft
i want to make better use of the front garden but more importantly i have back problems and find the hedges very hard work.
the hedges where there when i came here and i have been here longer than my neighbours, though i dont suppose that will change anything
advice?

If it's the boundary that you are responsible for then I'd have thought you can do whatever you like. Usually but not always the left hand side as you look at the house from the front.
If it's their boundary then you'd have to get their consent.

We do too.
Erm...yes I thought it was going to be "My welcome mat was getting a bit untidy so I booked a 'Brazilian' today".

I would leve the hedge at the front. Otherwise your house will look as out of place as those with fake stone cladding do.
As regarsds the rear garden its up to you what you do, on the side you are responsible for.

That would'nt be the hedge you drove into last year, would it?
Replacing a fairly soft hedge with a brick wall is not a wise move, given your history SS
