Saying that, I've tried just going onto the times myself, and it gives the same error. I am computer illiterate, but there may be a problem with the site.

Makes sense since the leap in brain power needed animal protiens and fat. One reason we evolved from multi stomached herbivores was bigger brains versus bigger guts. Plebs like those are bucking natural evolution

From The Sunday TimesJune 8, 2008

Parents of ill vegan girl may face policeMark Macaskill
A 12-YEAR-OLD girl in Scotland brought up by her parents on a strict vegan diet has been admitted to hospital with a degenerative bone condition said to have left her with the spine of an 80-year-old woman.

Doctors are under pressure to report the couple to police and social workers amid concerns that her health and welfare may have been neglected in pursuit of their dietary beliefs.

The girl, who has been fed on a strict meat and dairy-free diet from birth, is said to have a severe form of rickets and to have suffered a number of fractured bones.

The condition is caused by a lack of vitamin D, which is needed to absorb calcium and is found in liver, oily fish and dairy produce. Decalcification leads to the bones becoming brittle and can cause curvature of the spine.

Dr Faisal Ahmed, the consultant paediatrician treating the child at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow, declined to discuss the specific case. He said, however, that he believed the dangers of forcing children to follow a strict vegan diet needed to be highlighted.

One leading nutritionist, who asked not to be named, said: “In most instances, the parents who are imposing this very restrictive and potentially hazardous diet are not themselves brought up as vegans. They are imposing on their children something . . . which we do not know enough about to know it is safe.”

Jonathan Sher, head of policy at Children in Scotland, an umbrella group representing 400 organisations, said social workers should intervene where a vegan diet was putting children’s health at risk.

Last year, an American vegan couple were given a life sentence for starving their six-week-old baby to death. In 2001 two vegans from west London were sentenced to three years’ community rehabilitation after they admitted starving their baby to death.

Glasgow city council said the incident involving the 12-year-old girl had not been referred to its social work department

We are meat eaters. Man would not be what they are today if we didn't eat meat.

We'd still be swinging from the tree's

People say it's cruel to eat meat. But most creature's on the planet eat one another. Why are we supposed to be different?

Unhappy

Whatever the parents feel or believe the health, safety and well being of the child must always be the priority and comes first.

Not saying a Vegan diet is wrong but it maybe not right for that child for all sortsw of reasons.

It is a sad story and the child is the one suffering and likely to for the rest of her life, no parent - in their right mind would wish that.

I would rather se the politicians, civil servants and farmers (who fed their cows dead animals) jailed, not the parents, the parents belived that they where feeding thier families good safe meat!

My other half is vegitarian, not vegan. We feed our kids a healthy and balanced diet including meatalong with their 5+ a day and will let them make an informed choice when they get older.

I can understand Veggies, I didnt eat meat for a couple of years myself then really fancied a Burger, I cant understand Vegans and Fruitarians, its all so pointless, us using dairy products is part of a natrual symbiotic relationship that has existed for thousands of years and can be done without cruelty.

I think sometimes Veganism smacks of a bit of "Look at me" and hints at some deep self worth issues, Sometimes it seems that people want to not exist through making as little impact on the planet and other beings, becasue us humans are so destructive and not worthy of existing on this planet, they put Cows and Sheep above people, sorry, we exist, we a re succesful predator, get over it, we arent going to go away and we can live frugally, eat meat and not be so destructive, we evolved so stop apologizing for our existence, same goes for the green movement, we cant all live in dung huts and weave baskets to sell to tourists.

As for making the kids ill, ffs, get a grip, kids need carbs, fat, fibre, iron, calcium and vitamins and god knows what, they thrive on crap compared to carrot sticks and rasins, a balance needs to be struck, I personally want to strike parents who stop teir kids having chocolate and produce a bag of Raisins and say "Tarquin doesnt eat chocolate, he loves his Alfalfa sprouts", the evil b4stards, it doesnt work, they get old enough and rebel, a relative of our went all organic and fed their little lad like that, he was under sized and educationally sub normal by some way, he hs since done well at uni but it was no thanks to his daft mum

Actually, I had a Vegan explain it to me and it makes a lot more sense than Vegetarianism.

The reason most people give for being Vegetarian is that they don't wish animals to be killed just so they can eat, there's plenty of other food out there so no animals need slaughter. However, they will happily eat dairy, which comes from exploitation of animals, eggs, gelatin, etc. Seems a bit hypocritical to me for Veggies to let animals get exploited (and eventually killed because they've outlived their use) but draw the line at killing animals to eat them.
