Manchester congestion charge??

Manchester congestion charge??
I heard on the radio on the way home that the government are unveiling plans to introduce congestion charging in Manchester city centre the same as London.
Now I don't live in Manchester but I suspect if it happens it wouldn't take much imagination for them to do it in other cities i.e Leeds where I do live.
Firstly I thought this would be a local government issue anyway not for Parliment to decide, but secondly i'm wondering if the government really are on a suicide run, with the cost of motoring going up daily already.
Anyone else any thoughts on this?

I think they're extending it to the M60 that surrounds Manchester too.
So anyone coming from the M62 from the North East (me) wanting to get to Manchester Airport will have to pay the congestion charge.
Might get clobbered just wanting to get onto the M6, as you need to go on the M60 to get there.

I thought with Manchester at least 8 out of the 10 councils had to agree to the congestion charge and there was only 6 or 7 who had agreed, it was also supposed to be something that would have a major affect on the voting at the recent local elections
its something like 2 quid for the centre of manchester to go in, and 1 pound something to go inside the M60

The phrase "not so smug now" springs to mind lol.
Once Manchester gets the proper green light, watch how many more applications go in between now and 2010.

like this is going to happen:
i've lived in and around the Manchester area for most of my life and they have been saying this as long as I can remember and i'm 37. Stop talking about it and do it.
On the subject of conjestion charging,
is that the same as nodnoL?
The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA), which has proposed the scheme, said no congestion charge would be brought in before "significant improvements" had been made to bus, tram and rail services.
However, Stockport, Trafford and Bury councils are no longer supporting the bid for funding and councillors in Bolton have promised to hold a public referendum on the issue once all the facts are available.
The proposed public transport improvements would include:
• Metrolink extension to Rochdale and Oldham town centres, Ashton under Lyne, East Didsbury, Manchester Airport (the goverment pulled the money for this!) and the Trafford centre
• Second Metrolink route across Manchester city centre
• Priority for buses on several major roads (Causing more conjestion)
• Extra carriages for rail services
• Stations including Bolton, Salford, Altrincham, Stockport, Ashton and Rochdale, to become "interchanges", linking into other types of transport

They would only be in place from 7am to 9.30am and 4pm to 6.30pm weekdays.

Im sure Mans-Chest-Hair will adapt within the first year or so if it happens.
As for the improvements..... the same has been said about London Underground, but I have not seen anything amazing over the years that convinces me Pubic Transport is the way to go.

Stick an emissions zone camera mast up ya own ! lol
Speaking of which, I wonder where will be the next victim of that too. Even though its almost the same thing these days.
Spoke to a recovery driver the other day, apparently his flatbed truck is below the required emissions levels, but has the wrong engine code, so will cost...... £200 a DAY to drive in or through Londoom!
Also, is the Man CC gonna be the same ££ or a non London price. If its like pub food, prob about £1.50!

For f*cks sake; Ive never seen congestion in the Toon! I drove slowly over the swing bridge last week, but even that was only caused by a bus driver crawling along trying to pick up his Mars bar.....

Then they just keep charging it, so they can maintain the traffic jams
Anyone care to guess which city will be the one making the hat trick ?

Sheffield is poised. Theyve been waiting for this since they f*cked up every congestion beating road feature in 1992, boasting how theyd make traffic gridlock and force us onto busses...
The average speed through the city is already well below that in London!

Congestion is a pain in the ****, but I cant help but agree with the sentiment that they are NOT helping solve it, especially with the road busting to slow it down further.

Why if it's a congestion charge (Manchester) are they going to charge £2 to drive back out of the zone?
It's 1 thing charging people to drive in (even though we pay road tax to drive on the roads) but charging people to leave?????????????

Thats how London works. Its not IN and OUT, its movement WITHIN the area. Even if you drive across 6 quiet streets at 2pm its gonna cost you £8.
