Default Electric Bikes - any good?

As I cant borrow any more money against the house to fill my tank up, and have been off a bike for a few years I looked into electric bikes for an upcoming daily commute job I have looming.

Of course I've found the one I like already - almost a killowatt of power and about a 40 mile range. OPTIBIKE Electric Bike from Team Hybrid, sole distributors for the Optibike and electric bikes in UK and Europe. BARGAIN!!!!

Good sales line: "Pedaling an Optibike- you get the same amount of exercise you get on a traditional bicycle- you just go 3X as FAST". And then of course you re-map them

Any experiences ?

I would need to commute for two years to recoup that cost... and the wet weather gear would be an extra expense....

Good news guys! Just got this by e-mail from Optibike: Because we appreciate you- Please accept this coupon worth $100 towards any Optibike purchase.
This coupon expires on May 31, 2008- so act fast.

Not ready to buy? Just give us a call, learn how you can save up to $800 a month- and we will send you a free Organic T-shirt.
No fine print.

I think I'll go for the organic T shirt and pedal harder

What a ridiculous positioning for selling their product - its not a bloody timeshare!

Electric bikes i here you say.......This is what you want.....
.... these things will only get cheaper as the price of decent battery packs come down.
(dont think the below electric bikes are road legal because of the power they produce... much like the bike in the link you provided. There are stupid restriction laws on maximum power output for electric bikes.... i think)

anyone else with any decent links to electric bike manufacturers get em posted :>.... ive been looking for a cheap electric bike for a while

you *can* actually spend 5k on a good bicycle (without the motor) quite easily ,

3 x as fast will mean youll be breaking all the speed limits tho

- no doubt gordo will find some way to tax them as well "!

Like so many I just cant believe the price. They used to make add on engines for bikes years ago, Berini and Cyclemotor spring to mind. They seemed to get along alright and you would not even notice the fuel consumption.

You could get a good S/H motorbike for that price.

you mean like this......(derbi concept push iron / motorbike concept)

Derbi - DH 2.0

Ive been looking at those too... and other than the crappy strap on 50cc ebay mountain bike engines you can buy... there's nothing else out there like this from derbi.

even has an underseat exhaust

Thanks for the links. All a bit baffling at the moment really; need to brush up on my ohms law again!

I think what I need to do is get a kit to transform my Mongoose MTB, but I have no idea what to get yet. Also lots of dodgy sounding Chinese bits about. Gonna take some research this...

Funny thing was: I was walking into town yesterday to pick my car up and this guy on an MTB cruised past and fair whizzed by me with no real effort whatsoever. I couldn't work out what the heck was going on, but now this thread has made me realise he must've had an electric bike of some sort.
I swear he was sat up straight, no effort at all and just cruised away with his pedals looking like they were in slow motion for the speed he was doing.
