What to declare when looking for a new job
I will be looking for a new job quite soon and have a question.
I do a fair amount of paid photography on the side, the images are submitted to newspapers. magazines etc. and I'm registered with the Inland Revenue as self employed so everything is above board.
When would you mentioned this to a potential new employer? During interview, on CV, once you get a start date?
I know some employers have strict policies about no taking on other employment but until they offer you a job and you read the contract you wouldn't know.
If you do a google search for my name, I'm in the top 10 results so the new firm could easily google me before I attend the interview (as I expect most would do) and then they would know.
If you were in my shoes what would you do?
Ta peeps

Unless it's a job that you would be happy to give up the paid side of photography for, I would put on CV as an "other interest" along the lines of:
I am also a keen photographer and occasionally undertake assignments for ( whoever you do assignments for).

Can we assume that these commissions will not interfere with any new job?
So no sneaking off for a "dental appointment" or taking too many private calls on your mobile. That's the sort of thing a new employer might worry about.
Hank's words are fine but you could add "weekend" before assignments and, if they ask, say that your wife/gf deals with the paperwork side of things.
Not forgetting that many companies may have the need for occasional use of a photographer - brochure and product photos - promo flyers - press releases etc. So your skills could be seen as an asset.

There will be no conflict of interest, all work is planned in advance and 99 times out of 100 it's weekends. Very very rarely is it week days but it is always after core work hours. I would not do anything to jeopardise my main 9-5 job.
Thanks very much
