The Association of Chief Police Officers is calling on the government to ensure all new cars are fitted with speed limiters to prevent them from exceeding speed limits. ACPO will tell the Transport Select Committee later this month that the fitting of the equipment should be mandatory (it already is across Europe on some vehicles) and should be extended to private cars.

Richrd Brunstrom says there is a link between high speeds and road accidents and that each 1mph reduction in average road speed would cut collisions by 5%.

I wonder how many others will agree with him? The Association of British Drivers doesn't.

I presume it then follows that reducing the average road speed by 20mph will cut accidents by 100%. I think the average road speed on a motorway is something like 82 mph, so if we all had 62mph limiters there would never be any accidents

Edited to say the massive tailbacks caused by one 56mph-limited lorry overtaking another 56mph-limited lorry are surely one of the strongest arguments against compulsory speed limiters.

I would gladly accept a German-style compulsory speed-limiter: 155mph±10%. Funny how they always seem to be closer to 170mph than 140...

Unbelievable. Government can't sort out the railways, they'll just have us driving in convoys doing 40mph up and down the motorways.

Fcukwits.

Porsche don't put limiter in at 155MPH for Germany. unlike BMW or Mercedes who do. Chances to get so fast are not easy on Autobahns anyway regardless of time or weather.

Can you imagine what it'd be like on track with speed limiters of 70mph on our cars

Lorry & Coach accident rates rose after speed limiters were compulsory.

As pointed out many times before, our fastest roads (motorways) have the fewest accidents (some 3% of all accidents), but there are always lies, damned lies and statistics...

Human beings are not designed to behave like automatons, we need a certain level of risk & difficulty to make us pay attention, otherwise our minds wander or we fall asleep. That's why trains are fitted with a "dead man's handle" or a button that must be pressed every 30 seconds so that they stop if the driver nods off.

This sort of thing realy p1sses me off. It's not speed alone that kills, it's poor and careless driving. More effort should be put into driver training, esp in respect of keeping your distance.

Yet another smoke screen to hide the failings of government.
Let's persecute the overwhelming majority of the public, try and control them as much as possible and if they transgress even a little, hound them through the courts.
Then the administration of the country can distribute totally meaningless statistics to the press and detract attention away from the realities of living in Britain.
They can release as many bullsh*t figures as they want but i'm sure i can't be alone in feeling that the real criminals are getting away with quite literally murder in some cases.
I'm in the mood for a rant tonite after reading about another attempted hijacking (been there myself).
The news today was filled with another smoke-screen which tried to detract from the governments failing to keep Britain free from foreign diseases (eg F&M), i just wonder when we will stop being the p155pot for the rest of the world and our leaders will concentrate their efforts on improving the standard of living/education/health/safety for the tax paying honest, hard working public rather than being available for clearing up the mess made by other nations while we slowly slide further into a nation dominated by those who seek to make their living by subjecting others to physical/mental attack.

I thought the 155mph limiters were for aerodynamic issues, to prevent the front end from lifting.

As a general comment, Japanese cars are limited at 112mph, but there are ways around!!

Andy

PS - I don't think my Golf will go faster than 112mph!

I wouldnt be to worried folks there is no chance of this happening as it would cost the government too much money in lost ticket revenues.

I thought the 155 mph limiters were fitted because of the tyres. To go over 155, you need higher rated tyres which bump up the price of the car further.

May I make a suggestion?

If you are concerned about such thigns, then do somethig about it!

Write to your MP, wrte to the IAM (if you're a member), etc..

If you do NOTHING but sit and moan your views will not be heard.

Sorry but it rearly narks me when people moan about stuff but then do nothing to fight it.

Agree wholeheartedly with devils_ad69 - I am fully intending to get in touch with my MP and ACPO - but their site seems to be down at the moment.

What p1sses me off is that the police (and my complaint is towards the policy makers, not the police on the street) are more interested in shopping people for exceeding the speed limit by a few miles an hour, rather than tackling violent crime, car crime, theft etc.

Maybe this is another plan my our "car friendly" (yeah, right) government to get us out of our cars and onto our oh so reliable trains.

Simple... make it illegal for road vehicles to have more than one gear, and have a maximum gear:final drive ratio.

Limit all cars to 20mph or thereabout as a maximum speed, that means we'll never have an RTA again.

Before we all get too excited about this, just have a quick think about the kind of infrastructure that would be needed to implement it.

It won't happen.

I thought the 155mph was a gentleman agreement between Merc and BMW as they were competing top speeds and things were getting silly... hence Porsche has no restrictor...

Just filled in the comment form on BBC website.

I think that a transmitter in 30 / 40 / 50 mph signs with a restrictor in the car would be a sensible idea, don;t want it but would surely save lives.. and then unrestricted on national speed limit roads..

They cannot surely take the loss of income..

Also no one would buy new cars.. we'd just drive the old ones without the limiters like many lorry firms do.

like Shark said earlier....

if they spent the same amount of money improving driving standards then the roads would be a lot safer.

Andrew 6321

don't forget that TSL (?) have been testing a car with a built in automatic speed limiter for months .... so all new cars from now on could be restricted ... unless someone manages to shoot down all the gsp in the sky
