F1 cars running on diesel?
How long before F1 is a diesel sport, as touring cars seem to be going down this route?
Diesels are the future? What do you think?

I agree but is it likely?
I think its imminent, look back to the 70s / 80s F1 cars, big wheels, huge turbos, masses of power. Now compare todays F1, smaller engines, treaded tyres.
It has to be on the horizon as much as we all dont want it.
The 500cc championship was the elite, the pinnacle of championships with 2 stroke power. Now look at it, 4 strokes which are just as fast.

It will only happen if its wanted by the masses...or sufficient pressure placed on the sport from the politically correct.
Diesel is not necessarily a better fuel. Yes, you get more miles per gallon as there is more energy in a litre of diesel than a litre of petrol. However, diesel has lots of carcinogenic components.
I don't think motorsport will get a much of a following with diesels, they just don't make enough noise for it to be exciting. All the previous changes that have been made have been to reduce performance as the machinery got faster. They can still continue to do that by reducing engine sizes further and further if necessary.

the day they make a diesel sound like my scoobie when its roaring through its sports exhaust at 6k+ rpm is the day I will buy one. Until then I will just be poor and have to suffer poor economy.
Either that, or I will just buy the cheapest piece of tat should I no longer be able to afford a car that I actually like.

Been for a drive in a legacy diesel demonstrator. Liked it. But dealer said wait till next spring as they are getting a 220hp WRXSTID impreza. Under test its 0-60 is 4.7 secs.

But they have 800cc engines as opposed to the 500cc 2 strokes!
The day they went to 4 strokes was the day that I lost interest in bike GPs, they went from being something that only a handful of truly great riders could master, to fairly rider friendly superbikes.

so if it's all about power, then why not applaud electric vehicles, waaaay more efficient than any fossil fuel engine, i can just imagine the F1e grid, all humming milk-float stylee as the lights change. pitstop for new batteries, or a top up charge.....................maybe not.

And yes the motogp bikes are 800cc, but a 500cc 4 stroke will not produce the power and acceleration of a 500cc 2 stroke, hence the bigger bore.
I am the same, its only really been this year I have watched motogp again because Toseland has a competitive bike.

The current desmosedici, only Stoner has been able to get it to be consistently on the podium, as the power is a pig to put down. Granted they might not have the light switch power band of the original 500's, but then again neither did the final NSRs which were much more compliant than the fire breathing beasts Doohan Et Al tamed, or in somecases didn't.
Sorry for going off topic

I remember the big bang motors, totally adapted for Doohan IMO.
He took advantage of the fear factor and won many times, and deserved it.
Would be good to see a superbike aginst a motogp bike against a 500cc 2 stroke.
Or how about a diesel superbike? lol

The first year of 990 4T's saw them pissing all over the 500 2T's, imgaine how that would be after 6 years of development? The 2T's had stagnated in development, the 4T's are living the electronics revolution

I'm surprised they haven't gone back to Turbos. The old F1 turbos were 1500cc, and they got up to 1400BHP out of them. With todays technology you could easily envisage a 1000cc turbo engine.

F1 is trying ever so hard to reduce costs. Introducing a completely new style of engine just wouldn't work.
They are set to introduce the engine recovery systems bext year, which is a start.
