Real petrol shortages could be on the way.
As a result of the Grangemouth refinery closure, the Forties pipeline which prives 33% of the UK oil output, is to close as well.

People hear on the news that there will be a Petrol shortage, and the first thing they do is jump in the car and fill their tank to the brim even though they already had 3/4 of a tank left.
I tanked up yesterday purely because I'm going on Holiday next week, so need the car. Half the pumps at my local were empty.
No media coverage = no panic buying.
Doubt any of us would have noticed the difference

Maybe the media shouldn't report the inflation figures either? Maybe we wouldn't notice the increase in prices if the didn't? It's not the media that's to blame, its the public's attitude to the story.

I think it's both. The media exaggerate the story and create a feeling that the sheep public react to. They compliment each other perfectly

All you are doing is adding to the problem. What are we supposed to do with this info, rush out and panic buy?

We dont want the media banned from reporting anything, to suggest they should be muzzled is just worrying, I agree they need to report in a more balanced none sensationalist way. But we need to retain freedom of the press, or else how would we have known about MaX Mosely ?

Anything to do with petrol shotages is subject to a degree of irresponsible reporting these days. Ever since the embargos of 2001.

Its not the media reporting this that makes people panic buy, its when the politicians say 'theres nothing to worry about, no need to panic buy' that sparks the stampede
