Moving job for the 1st time ........
After 18years in the same company ending up as a life and pensions IT specialist designing and implementing solutions on a legacy mainframe I have resigned and will be starting in a new company in 3 weeks. The mainframe will be turned off in under 5years and didn't want to hang around until the end with a skillset that was then no longer required.
I know nobody at the new place and the only saving grace is that I will still be involved in life and pensions but leaning more towards the business and no longer being technical at all. To be honest I am absolutely bricking myself as I will be starting again and am constantly questioning whether I have done the right thing. Reputations take a while to build and I have a very good one at my current place.
Pros are the new company are bigger, much more profitable, much nicer office, good share schemes and giving me a 35% pay rise to move.
Cons are starting from scratch and no longer doing a 30hour week with as much flexibility as I like.
If somebody else asked me whether they should do it I would certainly say yes but when I think about it impacting me I suddenly question everything.
Anybody moved recently and how did you get over the constant questioning about whether it is the right thing to do ?
Thanks for listening.

I had a job pretty much like yours - worked on Legacy mainframe that was being turned off by about 2012. Left last Sep to go travelling and back now. Not really looking for work but put CV around a bit and i get a lot of people ringing me wanting to put me forward for jobs. If i do go back to work it will be a lot less technical and more managerial as well like the way you're going.
I'm 100% sure i did the right thing
You'll be fine

It will absolutely fine - Don't worry about it.
Don't be surprised if you get the moving "bug" before you settle somewhere. I left somewhere after 8 years and it took me another 3 moves to find the right place again.
Also, don't me tempted to say "at my old place" 37 times a day. There will be differences, expect them. You have to fit in with them, not the other way round - Of course you can add value from your previous experience

its my last day tomorrow been with the same company 7 years and worked my way up.
I had to move if I wanted to take the next step up the earnings ladder and test myself in a sales environment, time will tell if im right but I feel its the right move.
It'll be hard to leave though as I get on very well with a lot of my colleagues.
Your pay rise should reassure you! The fact they are giving you a pay rise even though you are not using the same skills means they must have faith in you!

You're going to absolutely hate the first couple of weeks at the new place. You really are. Everything will be unfamiliar, you will know what seems like nothing. You constantly feel a need to prove yourself and will simply not be able to settle.
It will last for 2-3 weeks, and then... well things just get better, and better. You start to come in knowing what you need to do that day, and (at least) know who to talk to, to get help.
You'll start to see things happening and by the end of the first month you'll (hopefully) wonder why you didn't do this before.
Give it a couple of weeks - my old boss gave me the same advice and TOLD me to phone him after two weeks just to say i hated the new job.
He then said if I wanted to come back after a month he would accept me back with no loss of service.
I phoned after the month and said I'd stay as the new job was great.

It will be fine, new things to see, do and learn even, if you was capable in your old job then your goodness will see you through there, new face will be learnt over a period of week, people are mostly friendly to new starters and provifing you go in with the open mindedness that I no doubt you already have they will accept you with open arms, but if you go in and try to make people do things a different way your days will be a lot tougher
Just enjoy it and the extra money
