Default Ebay Shenannigans

Oh joy.

Bought a DL Lite (crimson and black) from a UK supplier for £83 plus £21 p&p. Only it turned up with a customs sticker all over it demanding £17 VAT and a Post Office addition for £8 handling.

I couldn't receive the goods until £25 was handed over.

I'm not at home at the moment but my wife sent me a photo of the sealed package with the big sticker all over it and I've sent this onto the seller

I've e-mailed the seller and he has asked for the proof but is trying to state that the costs are fixed and he IS the cheapest.

Yeah right. I paid your prices give me my £25 back.

I've not left feedback yet and not raised a dispute as I'm giving him chance to come good.

Opinions please folks as I am a virtual newbie when it comes to EBay.

Have you got the listing number, as somewhere in the advert, it may mention something about customs ?

What does the listing state as item location?
If it states the UK then the seller should have picked up the customs sting.

Spoof bidders, ruiners of Ebay auctions, that Egay do nothing about because most people dont bother claiming their listing fees back, and thats another £1 in Ebays pocket.

As for the DS, as above, link or item number please
Does it say anything in their feedback about customs, overseas etc?

If you check the feedback there are quite a few mentioning it has come from HongKong. I counted 4 that mentioned they had to pay £50 Duty.

Nothing to suggest it, everything points to him being a uk seller, his name even!

His english skills are crap though, Using text language in an ebay advert is just stupid! Looks completely unprofessional.

It's not an auction, it's a sale of a new item from a shop.
It clearly states that the item is "in" the UK.

I'd want my £25 or small claims court, dispute on ebay, get the shop taken down. etc.

Theres quite a few pointers to it not being a UK company selling it :

1) the P&P charge is £24 - a bit rich for a UK company, even if sending by Parcelforce or Courier

2) Despite the high p&p cost and it being sent out the next working day, it says delivery in 7-14 days. Even 2nd class post which is the slowest UK delivery service is quicker than that.

3) The grammar in the shipping description part.

4) The sellers item location is UK rather than a specific area.

5) Quite a lot of their negative feedback mentions the item is shipped from Hong Kong, not the UK.

I like the fact he apologises by leaving negative feedback.

Agree with the above 14 days delivery at £20 and poor english ... That said some of positive feedback say how good the game is??? Thick thick thick.

Regardless of the "little clues" he states that the item IS in the UK and that postage is £19.99 for ALL countries. He owes you anything that is above and beyond his listed shipping charges. Start a dispute and take no **** from him.

Firstly, it doesnt state anywhere that the item is located or sent from the uk.

The seller is registered on ebay.co.uk- but that means nothing as there is no requirement to list or post items from the registered country. The two are distinctly different.

It is pretty obvious with just a few glances that its coming from overseas:
-Shipping cost: 19.99 pound. Same shipping cost for any country.
Not so perfect english- flat shipping rate to anywhere in the world. Dead give away.
-SHIPPING DESCRIPTION- It will be shipped on next business day. It arrive on 7-14 days. We don't offer combine shipment. Same shipping cost for any country. U will be shipped a replacement only if U buy insurance. 30 days warranty.
Shipped next day- but takes a week to two weeks to arrive? Grow some sense... thats the biggest giveaway of all.
- His feedback-
you buy the seller, not the item!
-US Version supplied with UK AC Adapter
Another giveaway...
- cut and paste description
Always done for far east auctions- as their english is generally ****e!

At any rate- customs and import charges are ALWAYS the responsibility of the buyer not the seller/sender.

Chalk it down to experience, and next time read the descriptions a little more carefully...

That defaults according to the seller location... he obviously hasnt changed it- like most people don't!
You should always read the description- not ebays default boxes which loads of sellers never bother filling in anyway.
Still doesnt take away from the fact that everything else points to it being from the far east...

I don't care what is "pointed to" or "suggested". If someone clearly prints in black and white that the item location was the UK - I would go through the channels and try to get my money back.

I agree I wouldn't have gone for it, but as the OP states, he is an ebay newbie, and I don't see why people that expressly prey on those who are unfamiliar with the nuances of ebay should get away with it.

You only need to see his feedback to see its not a UK item ......

I dont buy anything with out searching through there feedback.
Looks like you were caught out.

I still dont understand why people dont buy from people like game and gamestation... Its might be £10 - £15 more but is it all really worth the hassle

Just to point out I did come on here and ask if this was a good deal to go for and the consensus was Yes.

However, I've just got home and opened the parcel to find that the DS box was opened already. In my mind this constitutes the goods NOT being new, and I think I now have even more grounds to open a dispute and get my money back.

It also occurs that if he wants the goods BACK he's going to have to pay for the postage back.......

Keiran, is there a reason why you chose this one from Ebay, Ive been looking at them (dont know a lot about them I must admit) but they are only 99 quid from www.play.com and its free delivery too

yours at 83 quid plus 21 postage puts it dearer than play and a US one, not a genuine UK one with full warranty etc

Am I missing something ?
