Things to do in York
Her ladyship's decided she wants to go to York to spend her birthday shopping this sat.
Despite being a fate worse then death can anyone recomend places to visit during the day and evening and somewhere to stay that isn't going to cost and is safe to park the scoob nearby

Probably not what she wants to hear but the railway museum is good...I'm no train spotter before you start! The cafe does really good food plus there's one of them 'London Eye' wannabe wheel things.

Depends what your into - have a walk around the Minster, loved this place and maybe the viking centre.
as for a night out well anywhere along near the river is ok along the Micklebrook and if your an old git like me go to The Reflex 80's bar.
as for places to stay try 2stay.com and have a butchers.

I went to York with my girlf last november for a few days break-can highly recommend it as a good place to go-i enjoyed the york dungeons and also railway museum is great and free! i didnt think much of the viking museum tho-maybe just me-also there is a good museum in middle that costs not a lot to go in but take ages to get round-might be called the york tower museum or something but got an artillary gun outside it-also well worth a walk round the cathedral and the extra money to go up the tower.
We stayed at the travel lodge under a £26 a night deal and that was right smack in centre of the city and was fine and plus was next door to a nice weatherspoons pub which we would use for night time drinks and brekky in morning.
For car parking we had to use a car park about 1/4 from the travel lodge but it was under cover and basically a long stay one and was locked over night-so seemed a good secure place and this cost i think £9 for 24 hours.
All in all well worth a few days there-even found a good sword shop and brought a nice souvenier sword back home

I actually live in york, i would recommend going to the McArthur Glen designer outlet for shopping, you'll save a ton! For other things to do, head to the shambles, the castle, its pretty nice down by the river and if you can get away from her you're only 5 mins from elvington and there's nearly always something on there. For food, try meltons too among others and for lunch etc id try the city screen restuarant, very good food and a view over the river.

As others have mentioned, The Shambles is very nice and interesting to walk round, plus there are some lovely fudge shops (including one where you can see it being made, drool). If I have to go shopping with the other half then York's about the best place to do it IMO. Plus, the Minster is an amazing building, if you like that sort of thing...
