Newts - is this the time of year for them?
Just went out to the garage to feed our rabbits and did a double take at what I first thought was a black twig to realise it was a minature lizard. Put a cup over it quick in case it run off under all the stuff in the garage to find that it was hardly moving. It appears to be a very young newt due to its tiny size.
Think its been in the garage a while as it was very dry and I assume almost dead. I have put it out on the lawn in all the soaking wet grass but doubt it will recover.
Don't know what it was doing in our garage as I can't think it would want a warm dry place being a newt? It was also black in colour with no colour markings at all. I didn't think newts were completely black?
Never seen a newt before so last place I would have thought to find one would be in your garage?

I didn't handle it I picked it up in a cup and put it out on the lawn. It either recovered (I doubt it) or was early morning bird/cat/fox food as it wasn't there at 06.30 this morning.
I was wondering about the protection thing and whether I should have phoned the local animal rescue but that time of night I wasn't going out in the car for a drive about.

Only some newts are highly protected. We get loads of them in the garden and in our pond. They disappear during the winter (they hibernate), and start appearing again around nowish. They can usually be found hybernating under rocks etc, and they do get very dehydrated (sometimes looking like an old bit of leather they get so dry and shrivelled). I suspect that it did recover and wandered off somewhere...
