Depends on exactly what you need to achieve.

Full ledgers etc?

Problem is, each business needs are different, I had to move from quickbooks (which was a great package at first) until it didnt do something I needed it to do, I then had to move to sage which was a pain. Best speaking to someone like this - accounts doctor who can advise accordingly.

Sage is the serious end of the market - Quickbooks can do a lot for you but when you get into paying staff etc you need to move to Sage with Payroll and your accountant will like you more

Sage is pretty much the industry standard.

I dela with over 200 small businesses and they use either Quickbooks, VT Transaction or Sage. I do my accounts with VT purely cos its dead quick and easy to use and also my accountants support it.

Wow!!!! someone else who has heard of VT!!!
I worked for a chartered accountants where we used VT for all our clients. When I eventually learned Sage & others I just couldn't believe how complicated and horrible they were to use. VT is so quick and simple and for simple businesses it works so much better. The only disadvantage that I can see is that you can't create sales invoices with it that automatically post themselves, so you have to use excel and then post each invoice. Not a problem if you have only a small number of invoices each month. And they are very quick to post.

Also you can modify and delete transactions after they are posted which is great because on sage etc you cannot do that very well at all.

mine are cool, forget the stereo typical image of accountants. plus a good accountant should save you money not cost you money. There worth a plug at least Kime O'Brien - Chartered Accountants Macclesfield - Home

We're not all bad - some do exist to help their client pay as little to the tax man as they legally can.

There's two types of accountancy; one that favours the client - and the other that favours the tax man.

Not to forget the wildcard; the incompetant buffon that f**ks everything up, so you get hammered by the IR, but makes f**ks up in such a way that their **** is totally covered from any reprocussions (short of taking a dump on his doorstep and supergluing his doorlocks ).

Anyhoo; Back to the OP: Sage

Just wouldn't advise using it on Vista and DO NOT use Norton in any shape or form (actually it does work, but it can be glitchy).

Most people use sage but the tax man loves it as he can easily spot dubious entries and you have a legal responsibility to hand over all electronic reports during an investigation. The way froward is good old fashion ledgers and a couple of days training about double entry book keeping. You have loads more options to control your accounts then and its much harder for the tax man to investigate you.
