Would've thought it'd be a matter of opinion really...

Personally I really like the Tag Monaco classic single dial version, but wouldn't mind the newer one with the three extra dials..

If you incluse pocket wates then the caliber 89 from Patek Phillipe must be up there 33 seperate mechanical functions apart from time 2000 moving parts and an astrolgical star chart with 2000 stars.

The likes of patek and franck muller have watches at over a million pounds. The best would need a tourbillon, grand sonnerie, minute repeater, perpetual calender, power reserve indicator, moon phase indicator, Stop watch, Animation for the minute repeater, temperature indicator and altitude meter. ALL done mechanically and auto matic to boot. 1.5- 2.5 million may cover it.

Once again though, surely its only if you want a watch to do all that. In the same way that people just want a mobile phone to call people with, some people just want a watch to tell time and nothing else. I still think its a matter of personal taste, I only need a watch to tell the time and keep it time well, other than that it just needs to look good hence my choice. I wouldn't want something in which I need a degree Astrology and Physics to use...

ALot of it is about demonstrating the sheer skill genius and talent that the maker had put into a device that has no micro chips or electronics in it. In a Digital age I think people appreciate craftmanship and art more than ever.

Yep, I do, hence why I'd just like a quality watch to do what its meant to do and do it well. Like everything else.

I have a classic Impreza it doesn't have all the gadgetry of the new age cars yet can still hold its own.

I have a phone that calls people and keeps reception

Sometimes things can be over engineered, just because they can, doesn't mean its necessary. For that reason I can't see why it can be classed as the best by going on the amount of features it has.

Tag Monaco classic for me.

YOu saying the tag monaco classic is a great watch is a bit like my sister saying the car she most wants is a peugeot 207 diesel. It shows a complete lack of knowledge or imagination but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Ultimately and if gossip in the watch world is to be believed several of the large watch makers = Omega, rolex, patek, cartier etc attend watch auctions that will be either open auctions or specialist auctions often arranged by them...

Rumour has it that it is not unknown for said manufacturers to bid for pieces / watches that they may or may not already own - thus increasing the perceived value and generating a huge amount of PR when one of their brand reaches silly heights of ££ million pounds.

High end watches used to be about the craftmanship and passion possesed by their creators, few if any of the big name brands still have that passion, ultimately like the majority of large internationally recognised brands they are all about profits, PR and increasing their share of the market place.

I love watches and have owned Omega, Tudor, Breitling, Sinn, Oris etc etc all great brands and watches.

If I ever have the required spare cash I would love the opportunity to own one of Roger Smiths fantastic watches... handmade, not had assembled, Hand made.

http://www.rwsmithwatches.com/static...=series&page=1

If you are into watches well worth a look through his site. Pretty much everything is handmade, face, mechanism, hands etc etc.

Not the most expensive but certainly one of only a few watch makers that can truly say their watches are Hand made! So far as price goes... if you have to ask you cannot afford it

His watches are of a very classic design which compared to my usual taste is way off the mark i.e.

The Breitling went a while ago, the Edox is firmly attached to my wrist

Must start doing the lottery again!

Regards

GB

There's no answer to which is the worlds best watch, it will depend on the individual's value of what a watch is and does - if you're not bothered about style, engineering, design and craftmanship then any watch that keeps accurate time will be the best watch as far as you're concerned.

If the ultimate accolade for the worlds best watch goes to the one that keeps the most accurate time, which ultimately what a watch is for, then the Junghans range which are controlled by radio signal from various atomic clocks around the world must feature highly.

In terms of craftmanship, then the grande complications by some of the more exclusive watch makers mentioned above must be close to the top of the list.

On the other hand if your Breitling Emergency distress signal saves your life after ditching your plane, then that would rate highly

Gareth

Top 10 Most Expensive Watch - 2005 « Watches and Clocks around the world

There's a Vecheron Constantine on there costing $1.5 million and it isn't diamond encrusted.

I don't think it's the best watch in the world however. In my opinion the 'best watch in the world' is about more than complications in the movement, price or durability.

My vote for best watch ever?

Has to be a Rolex Sub, most brand recognition, most constant design, most worn, widely copied by other manufacturers etc etc.

Bizarrely I play hockey (and ski) with Roger. Beautiful watches, cases are special too. Now that is a hand made watch!

If you want Big Ben, search Dent. Lovely watches IMHO, with obviously great heritage.

On the other hand (ha ha!) if you want a watch that is accurate to within 5 secs a YEAR, is very easy to read (luminous dial), light as a feather (titanium), water proof at least for swimming, has day/date, chronograph, time zones and every function under the sun, rotating bezel etc etc, then it's a Breitling Aerospace. Good enough for John Travolta

Breitling Aerospace Avantage E79362 - 838 - 534 Mens watch at AATime.com

Richard.
