I beg your pardon

Were did this saying come from. I was just on the phone to some English girl in Poole & she said "I beg your pardon" ?? She can beg all day if she asked nicely

Anyway moving on, whats the reason for it ?

She may have said this if she hadn't heard you.. she might have been filing her nails or eyballing some young office stud, she may have said 'I beg your pardon..' for the discourtesy of not listening to your dulcet tones
