Lands end to John O'Groats
Advice needed, a handfull of us, 39 Engineer Regiment, are doing the above on bikes later in the year for charity, all good.
However the longest i have ever cycled is up and down a few mountains with a couple of spills in between, never a road bike of this scale. Anyone done this before, all tips welcomed. P

Simply put in the miles and start NOW
Presume you will be trying to do around 100-120miles a day on your trip and you need to start getting out and trying to do mileages like that at the weekends etc
My advice is to start with what you can comfortably manage (I assume you are pretty fit so circa 50 miles would be manageable) then try to increase your distance by 10% every outing.
Good luck to you mate and may the wind be behind you

I'd love to do this, need to find a friend who's willing to give it a go with me though. Be nice to get some sort of sponsorship for it too and help a worthy charity.
I have done Grantham to Nottingham and back all flat lands 50 miles in 4 hours and calculate that its about on target for the big one. Infact, I think this post might have given me a reason to do that this summer
Good luck btw

And being armed forces you'll know to train in conditions you expect to encounter on your trip to ensure you and your gear are good for the task.

Yep - penile numbness! no laughing matter. Makes you wonder if it's still there!

The longest ride I've done is 350 miles from Derby to Berwick, took 5 days, so about 70 - 80 miles a day. This was on Mountain bikes and some of this was off road so will be a bit different to LE - JOG.
On a racer you can probably cruise at about 20 mph, as opposed to about 14 mph on a mountain bike.
The longest training ride I did was 50 miles, as long as you're cycling regularly you should be OK. Make sure you get your bike ride height setup right, saddle height can make a huge difference to the effort you have to put in, most people tend to have it a bit too low. I've also got a Specialized saddle, never had numb nuts yet!
If you're in the forces you should be fit to begin with, so it should just be a case of building up the cycling muscles.
Here's our website of past rides if you want to see a few pics, Challenge 2007
Good luck!
