Question

Just out of interest, how many of these are yet ordered by any AMERICAN airlines?

And what excuses have the Americans found for them NOT being allowed to land at any American airport?

Have been watching the documentary on Discovery of The A380, very interesting (in a spotter type way!).

Strikes me as a risky strategy for an airline. Just one terrorist bomb to kill 400 odd people and no one would ever want to fly on one. dl

US Airways have some on order. All major airports in the US have invested in the infrastructure required to accommodate the A380. Interestingly the Japanese airlines are starting to show some interest. They have been pretty much a Boeing-only market for 50 years, but the delays to the 787 programme is ticking then off and as lots of other airlines are planning to use A380's for flights to Tokyo Narita I think it's making ANA & JAL look at the finances again.

The big two domestic airlines have a surprisingly large 747 fleet for domestic flights, but they are getting long in the tooth now and not cheap to operate. Whilst Hanada airport is opening another runway to boost capacity, Narita can't do that and A380's may help boost capacity with existing slots.

Don't see too many planes getting blown up with bombs these days though do you?

i watched that aswell found it amazing how quick a plane of that weight and size can slow down, especially as thrust reverse only on inner engines.

i know what you mean about concorde the one at filton near bristol looks fuked now, whereas the one they got in barbados is kept in a purpose built hanger to keep it looking good.

you wouldn't think the thing was designed and built by the english/french the way they are stored over here.

Yes, because that is vastly different from blowing up 390 on a 747.

(some 747s carry over 500 people IIRC, the Japanese domestic ones)

I expect security will be very tight for flights on these (I expect muslims flying on them get sat in a special "con air" style area! ) - but basically killing 400 people is a low target for terrorists now - I think they'd rather do 9/11 style attached and use the airliners as weapons to kill more people, not just blow up those on board.

Very impressive planes anyway - saw one flying around Filton when I was working near there a couple of years back.

IIRC the A380 can be fitted out to carry about 800 in an all economy configuration.

I'm more worried about getting run over by a bus than some lunatic blowing me up on a plane in the name of a loving and caring religion. That would just be the ultimate irony.

I won't be flying on one. No way pedro

Give me boeing over a scarebus any day

Besides, at the moment I like being on the upper deck on a 744 with only 19 other people.......as opposed to 400 econo-chavs upstairs on the other side of a curtain on this whale-mekon type thing.

Thankfully, BAs JFK route sell is geared more towards frequency than capacity... so the whale is unlikely to be featuring on my usual run any time soon.

You must work for Boing (sic) if a 744 = a specific 747 (maybe its an import )

But do you also own a warm second home a jetski and have a 1080P telly and extremely white teeth? Thought not

Love the plane - more people, less polution.

So you'd rather fly on a plane that was designed as a freighter in the 1960's, is probably 20 years old with a somewhat tired interior and wheezy engines, in preference to the latest, state-of-the-art plane?

So long as the Italians have had nothing to do with the metalwork the Airbus should be fine

I still remember seeing the first 747 do a low flypast at an air display in Omaha, and we could not believe the size of that one let alone the A380.

Yeah! This one has ABS, AYC and Bluetooth!!! Just imagine that mindset in comparison to a 10yr old car Anyway...

I worry when I get on a plane these days and the interior has faded to beige... Anyone been to Rostov? That's my next flight

Electronic and electrical devices should not be used during take-off an landing.

Sod em...if they can use a video cam, I'll be sending texts and listening to MP3s from my special "drown out the screaming babies" compilation that I have made especially for my life spent on budget carriers
