I might be wrong about this but the numberplate needs to be on a currently taxed and MOT'd vehicle in order to be valid for transfer / purchase.
A 1977 car (31 yrs old) not been taxed since 1988 (20 yrs ago) - Good luck with that search.
I do have access to 68 DGD if you'd want to put an offer in for that.

I think if the car has been scrapped (which looks likely) then the registration has gone with it forever.
If the car hasn't been scrapped then you can get the registered keeper from the DVLA so long as you have a genuine reason. A small fee is charged but just tell them what you want to know for and they'll help you out.

If the car's been scrapped, then why can't the reg number be re-issued?
Surely that number will have been deleted from records on a scrapper so in theory it could be re-issued.
Or am I thinking bollox

From the DVLA site
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/inf46.pdf
14. What if my vehicle has
been scrapped?
Scrapping occurs when a vehicle, whether an insurance write-
off or not, is broken up for spares or otherwise destroyed. Once
a vehicle ceases to exist its registration number is cancelled.
If your vehicle has been scrapped, you will not be able to
transfer its registration number.
The law requires that if an Authorised Treatment
Facility (or scrapdealer) destroys a car or light
van, they must issue a Certificate of Destruction
(CoD) to close the record held at DVLA. They will
keep your V5 registration document/certificate.
You should only notify DVLA by returning the
V5 registration/document certificate if you have
broken up the vehicle yourself, or the vehicle has
not been issued with a CoD.

Yeah, good luck with that, took me 4 years to get them to auction the plate I was after (one that has never been issued), and it's finally happening in July, at the opposite end of the country from where I live.

That largely depends on my financial situation come July.
My boss has been whinging about me turning up to customer sites in such an obviously old car ('99 Legacy B4) but doesn't pay me enough to buy anything newer, so this seems like a good workaround.
That said, the *******s set a reserve of £400 on it (which actually works out more like £500 after the taxes and fees and the taxes on the fees), so if the Legacy ends up needing new brake disks around then, it isn't going to happen.
