...and the starving people of Africa?

Are they sorted then?

Was just wondering about these and wondered if there is any chance the press decide what we should be worrying about.

Reminds me of that Bond villain who made up the news he wanted

Aids is still a huge problem in Africa. HIV in developed countries is virtually cured now (in as much as it will not develop to full blown AIDS) and a 5 million kids a year die from startvation.

Obviously things like Sport Relief and comic relief still go on, and we as a country give aid to third world countries. But I suppose the initial impact the news stories in the 80's has long since disappeared.

I guess people just don't consider it news worthy anymore.

Kinda like sentiments expressed about the international community's response to the Aids crisis in Africa in the Rage against the machine song, 'darkness'

"But these governments, they don't mind the procrastination,
They say, We'll kill them off, take their land, and go there for vacation"

Sometimes you do wonder.....although TBH I just don't think the media are as interested in reporting progress in these matters as they are catastrophies.

If it bleeds, it leads, as they say!

I think the use of cured is the wrong word, contained, would be at best appropriate, with HIV still on the increase in the developed world.

Yup its not cured as such - But there is no reason why you cannot live a perfectly normal, healthy and long lived life with HIV now.

I'm teaching a lady to drive who's a health care worker specialising in AIDS/HIV, and she confessed to me that Leeds saw an 86% rise in diagnosed cases from '03-06. Immigration is known as the primary cause as people flood in, not only from Africa, but their main area of concern is the influx of eastern Europeans, especially those whom arrive to work in the sex trade. She reported that the spread through drug abuse is minute in comparison.

Definitely the wrong word: there were reports in the news recently of a survey wherein a majority of teenagers thought that there was a cure for HIV/AIDS.

These problems mentioned are still there, no doubt about that. The only reason why you don't see them announced on the "News" is the media companies are bored with old stories. Reminding us of AIDS in Africa and Bird 'Flu in Asia is DULL, ratings will fall.

I have noticed in the last 10 years an ever increasing level of reporting of "bad" weather.

I suggest we all turn off our PC's, TV and go out to the park for a walk. You will notice the sky isn't falling.

The trouble is Dave, that in the current climate/regime, it isnt politically acceptable to state that 2nd/3rd world immigration is the cause: so people remain ignorant. God forbid that we stigmatise African immigrants, or breach their human rights by testing them.....

Aids is not as important today as putting padding around lamp posts in case you walk into them (apparantly).

Yes but that is to protect people while they are sending text messages. It is of course part of their human rights to stop them from being injured because they are not looking where they are going!

When will we be asked to wrap our cars in bubble wrap to protect iPod wearing feckwits sending texts who cross roads without looking to see if it's safe ? I'd rather wrap their empty heads in bubble wrap, completely, and very tightly, for a good few minutes !
