Default Riddle #1

A 24" x 24" square metal plate needs to be attached to a wooden board.
Nails are used all along the edges of the square such that there are 25 nails on each side of the square.
Each nail is at the same distance from the neighbouring nails.

How many nails are used?

Surely you can get really pointy thin nails that will pierce a metal plate if it's not too thick?

Or pre-drilled holes in the metal

There might be no nails in the corners though

That's all assuming the plate is put on flat. It might be put on its edge.

Not exactly a riddle though is it? Just simple mathematics, same as riddle #2

To be fair, it's a riddle for Cornwallians.

Like mirrors.

The fact that he actually mentions the size of the plate, which is of course irrelevant, is a dead giveway - This isn't a riddle, this is in an actual question he has cleverly asked in the form of a riddle to ge this answer, rather than pose it in DIY, where it fades into obscurity without anyone ever reading it

I would use a 97 nails around the outside of the square so the nail head would "attach" the metal square to the wood.

101 - because 5 of them will get mis-hit and bend thus you need to replace them! I'm guessing at the 5 though...

25x4=100. Why complicate it by putting a nail in the corner? Just make sure the two adjacent nails at the end of the sides are at the same distance as the others along the edges. (Actual spacing depends on edge distance.)

Good point

The answer is either 96 (with nail in corner) or 100 (without a nail in the corner)
