Default My Brother has had a nasty accident

My elder brother is a self-employed courier (got his own van) and does some sub-contracting for a firm and drives their lorries.

Yesterday he was loading one of the lorries and the roller door at the back came down and crushed his right hand.

It seems the middle finger on the hand had the tip basically hanging off so the hospital (who by now had him pumped full of anti-biotics and pain-killers) were going to amputate to the first knuckle, and possibly the second depending on the damage.

He then phones me after he is out of theatre (yep - this was done on a LOCAL) and tells me that rather than remove the tip (or most) of the finger, the doctors removed the crushed bone and replaced it!!! Sewed everything back up and sent him home!

I'm going to have to find out what the hell they put in there instead, but basically the only thing he's lost is his fingernail. He HAS lost it permanently as the growing point was completely destroyed...

With some serious luck he'll keep the finger, but this all now depends on whether there is no post-op infection. If it all stays clean and the tendons repair he could have almost complete function back.

Or, he may lose most of the finger. We find out next week. Wish him luck the poor sod was terrified yesterday.

Sorry to hear that, one of the lads I work with lopped off his thumb with a circular saw. He's been off work for 4 months but has recovered to almost full mobility now.
It's very possible your brother lost some bone due to splintering and this was replaced with a rod, much better news than losing the finger completely.
I wish him a speedy recovery.

they did the same with my right arm mate, proper broke it in half my arm was basically hanging off, they replaced both bones partially, apparantly it only worked because of how severe the break was and the position. it hurts occasionally but at least I still have it

good luck to him
