Like anything, you get what you pay for with Mountain Bikes, £300 isn't a great deal. Something like a Specialized Hardrock hardtail would be around that price.
Specialized Hardrock Sport
I got my son the Hardrock Disc and its a cracking bike for the money (£350).

There's a BEAUT here: SPECIALIZED ROCKHOPPER DISC 04 19in Mens Black on eBay, also, Bikes, Cycling, Sporting Goods (end time 27-Feb-08 11:19:01 GMT)
Also: eBay.co.uk - Men's Mountain Bike 17-19.5 in Front Suspension Bicycles Finder
The saracen, Carrera and the Trek are worth a look too. Good luck.
DON'T buy new!!! Not for £300, you'll be disappointed

I've got a Hardrock Sport Disc too, excellent bike on and off road.
Use it nearly everyday to commute to work and so far done 2000 miles on it with just new front pads needed

Carerra Vulcan I have seen mentioned a few times at £260 and have seen it get 9/10 in mags etc.
I've just started MTB'ing again and bought a Kona Hoss, very nice for the money.

Says in there my Genesis Core has "Stand out" forks. Don't know if this means they are good. Personally I find them too soft and they can't be locked. Need to change them.

Sadly you only get what you pay for, what do you want to do with it? No I dont mean ride it, I mean what sort of riding and where?
Try to spend a little more (500) or look for a good secondhand one, they usually fetch half the purchase price so a bargain really.

my mountain bike is 13 years old now, but still in excellent condition with all original components.
You are supposed to actually ride them every now and again though !!
