Freshwater mussels.........why can't you........
..........eat them?
A lake local to our French property has been drained for cleaning on it's 7 year cycle. It was full of huge, and I mean HUGE, some a foot across, freshwater mussels.
Trouble is, the locals reckon they aren't edible, and come on: if the French won't eat 'em, no-one will.
So why not?
In the end the local wildlife had a field day.

Near the bottom it does say that some North American people eat them, but my guess is the lake acts as a filter for someone's fosse septique!
