"You could die crossing the road"
Went out for dinner and drinks a few nights ago with a group of people I didn't know very well. I Was struggling to find common ground, interesting discussion so resorted to the usual cliches. "Wow its really busy in here!" and "Was your starter ok?"
We left the bar. I looked wistfully at my car. It wasn't too far away. I could just walk over get in and drive home. I wouldn't even be missed. Goodbyes wouldn't have mattered.
I digress.
There was a fairground ride nearby. One of those throw-you-up-tipple-over and scream jobs. Someone wanted to go on it and a few others agreed. I said something like "Thats looks awful its not for me thanks" (possibly in a girlyish tone but thats not for me to confirm). Some fella replied, no correction, sneered "You could die crossing the road".
For some reason that was the funniest thing ever in the history of comedy and everyone laughed. Not to be outdone I replied "haha yeah"
They all then proceeded onto the ride and I slowed my pace down enough to leave a gap and walked to sanctuary of my car....
Thing is I do take chances. I ride motorbikes (Darwin awards nominations are frequent) had a few gliding lessons, tried my hand at rock climbing and various other things. I am a man of adventure
So the comment "you could die crossing the road"...It annoyed me. Annoyed me mostly because I couldn't think of a snappy funny reply (anyone care to offer one?) but also because it summed up the evening. I was to shy and introverted to really open up. I was scared I might die crossing the road.
Oh well. I feel better now

Don't dwell on it mate, just be safe in the knowledge that you are stronger willed and won't be lead like a sheep into doing something you don't want to.
As others here have said , sounds like you were out with a bunch of numpties and are well shut of them.

Got a laugh at everyone calling the group 'numpties'!! So the OP doesn't like fairground rides but come on, he sounds like a Mr Bean to me!!
You're right, he needs to socialise with different people, try hanging around the railway station with a pen and pad.

...And thanks for all the kind comments It didn't honestly bother me that much. Sometimes I just clam up a bit. Its a bit of a burden but I try not to give in to it. Otherwise you just stay in, drink and post on Scoobynet all night
People consider me laid back for some reason, which most of the time I am, but sometimes I just panic a bit What can I say?
