Default CAR hire in US and A

Seriously though.

Do you need the paper copy of the UK driving license for car rental in the USA - Florida to be exact.

Safe to say its not where I thought it would be :rolleyes and I can't find the fecking thing anywhere.

Cheers,

Shaun

Definitely in this country.

I got hire in Cyprus with a international student card. So there may be some places in the USA. Not the sharpest tools and all that.

I'd rather have it than not. I guess you could always ask the rental company if you need it.

I've never had the new style license so have no idea what info is on the photo card, but I presume, as you still have the paper bit, that it does not contain all the info, hence the two parts.

I think rental places would want to see how old you are, how long you have been driving, any endorsements, and your license number. If all of that was on the photo part then you might be ok.

All you usually need is a credit card, a license with a photo (chances are the people at the rental place will have no idea what your license is anyway), and proof of insurance if you decline to take theirs.

Hey Urban afternoon I am actually in the travel industry and specialize in Florida (and before anyone says I'm noy gay) in order to rent a car you will need both copies of your driving licence (paper and photocard copy) but it really depends on who your car hire is with, I deal with Dollar rent a car mainly and they require both copy's M8 as do most of the car rental hire companys in Florida and America.

Hmmmmmm.

The paper bit is for the endorsements - I don't have any by the way, but I suppose how are they to know that.

See I went to the states about 5 or 6 years ago and I'm pretty sure they didn't ask for the paper bit.

DVLNI are their usual unhelpfull selves.

Rought transcript of earlier conversation.

ME:Hi, I need a duplicate of the paper part of the license.

DH:OK, you'll have to apply for a duplicate license then.

ME:OK fine. How long does that take.

DH:3 weeks sir

ME:Problem for me is that i'm going on holidays March 3rd

DH:You don't need your license to go on holidays

(Now picture this. I've been sitting waiting for about 35 minutes waiting to talk to someone)

ME:I need the paper bit for my holiday

DH:Trust me sir (which was said in a very patronising way), You don't need your license to go on holidays

ME:I do, because i'm hiring a car

DH:Why didn't yoy just say that then

ME:Because that doesn't concern you, all you need to know is that I need the paper part of the license.

Anyway, i'm bored typing now but you get the picture.

Long and short of it is that it'll have it within 10 days of application if I can prove my departure date.

But I don't trust them!

I rented a lovely (read POS) Dodge Avenger about 4 weeks ago from DOLLAR at JKF, who were more than happy with just the photo part of my license...

...I'd got the paper counterpart in my bag but they didn't even mention it, and I didn't offer it.

I'd say take both parts just in case - it's hardly a burden!

I regularly hire from JFK and just show the photocard bit.

That said, I have been asked for both bits in other places. So I just carry both around.

I've never had a license with a photo on,the license i have looks like it has been at the bottom of the sea for a 1000 years, and is now plastic coated, when presented to hire car agencies ,they all comment on that they have never seen such an article in all there lifes, but they have never refused me a car ,one day i might come unstuck, but untill then roll on the proper British license,HERE HERE

I rented a motor from Avis in Boston M.A last year.

Needed nothing other than a credit card.
