Default Michael Jackson, amazing performer or just...

...a kiddie fiddler?

The reason I ask is I am watching MTV Base and they just showed the Smooth Criminal video.
While he has gone super wierd over the years, and the stories of his inappropriate acts with kids.

But taking those bits away (not ignoring the serious implications), is he still one of the all time performers?

The energy in the shows, the dancing, the moves, the massive dance scenes in the big videos.....

Personally I was always facinated by him, the energy and passion during his big time, BAD, Thriller, etc.

Sorry for the randomness of the thread lol

Also, Usher was next up, also an amazing performer, just lacking the impact.

Hardly random. This week is the 25th anniversary of the release of the Thriller album, still rated one of the greatest or most groundbreaking of all time (apparently).

lol that fact to me is random
didnt know that. Not like its a michael jackson weekend.
So far its been Whacko, Biggy, Usher, Jagged Edge

But good timing in that case

Cant take much away from Thriller. How many other artists have had officially scheduled first viewings of their full length videos on british TV

Shame how things turned out for/with him in all respects.

Hey, I'm not a dedicated follower of 25-yr-old fashion - just there's been a couple of fairly big articles in the free papers on the train

You could sort of say the same about Gary Glitter, though he wasn't in the same league.

He was in his heyday the definitive King of pop music. I suppose people see him as a bit of a freak with all his doo lally tap actions, but make no mistake talent like that is rare.

MJ is a very talented artist IMO; regardless of all that cr@p that comes with him, no doubt. He is one of the ever-remembered artists for positive contribution to music/ entertainment industry

Well, the thing is that even the ones that dislike his style (for being so old skoolish, and for him being such a freak etc.) usually behold his performances with transfixed eyes Mental sanity of these outstanding performers is always in question, nothing new there. Imagine the pressure they could be under, due to being so outstanding in this real word full of regular people! Not that it gives him any right to exploit young people, but looking at his talent alone, he shines

MJ is a legend - some of the best pop music ever.

There is no way he will ever get back to the heights of his former glory days however.

Never been a fan, but you cant deny the impact he's had on music over the years, and the amount of records he sold speaks for itself for his popularity.

None of us know how much truth there was regarding the kiddie allegations - seem to remember that the kids ( Jordan ?? ) mother was mostly behind it, and had got him to accuse other people of the same thing ? AFAIK MJ just paid him off to get rid of him and make the whole thing go away, which seeing as it cost him his equivalent of pocket money was probably worth it.

He is very odd, but you have to remember he was never allowed to be a child. From a very young age his father was pushing him really hard in the Jackson 5 and hes spent almost his entire life in the public spotlight. I reckon that would make anyone go a bit loopy.

I do not see it as ground breaking at al, the video was the most hyped in history, most people believed the hype, it is OK.

Liked some of his early stuff then he got all wierd, IMHO started listening to his own press and surrounded himself with yes men and women who told him what he wanted to hear instead of what he should have heard - the truth and reality!

Good MJ pee take - Bad
YouTube - fat
(wind onto around a minute)

Rah all the vid together Thats an hour of my day accounted for lol

Paul yuo say about the video not being all that, but who else in that era was doing things like that? 15 min mini feature video's masses of people dancing, superb special effects for the day etc.

It was not only Thriller that had a massive launch, there was BAD too, and of course Smooth Criminal was another feature length due to the film it was from.

Personally, I think he had some great people working with him in his day, and the combination of talent and imagination was historic for music.

So good infact that Wierd Al has mad millions from his **** takes, and worthy ones they are too

Mike good point about the childhood thing, I think its something that no one on here could imagine the impact such a thing would have. If he did what the allegations suggest, then there is no excuse, but being misunderstood in his actions is also very possible.

Jordans parents blackmailed him to get money, then went to the press anyway. Who in their right mind would take a payout from a kiddy fiddler then leave it there!

Nice to see some mixed views here though, a lot more "fans" than I imagined.

Interesting it being that song actually. Written about all the women claiming to have had Michael Jacksons child and wanting money. Once it was obvious he was never gonna be a dad, the story changed maybe? Michael Jackson molested my child...............
