Interesting Fact
Quote:- "If your finances are fairly typical then you'll probably have a reasonable lump sum lying about in savings accounts. According to research carried out by Prudential last year, the average person in the UK holds £14,103 on deposit"
Therefore a married couple would have approaching £30,000 on deposit.
This excludes Stocks and Shares, Bonds, Property etc. it's simply cash.
Not sure what I was expecting really - just thought I would throw it into the melting pot.

What is an "average person"? Is that any man, woman, child, pensioner - or just tax-payers?
If the average unsecured debt "per person" is umpteen thousand, as we are led to believe, then there must be an awful lot of plonkers with both loans (thus paying interest) and savings (generating less interest).

Very few people I know have anything like £14k in the bank.
A fair few do however have access to £14k against the value of their house.
T'is easy to live the high life and lie on surveys nowadays.

Stats are so misleading though.
The vast majority probably have somewhat less than that "on deposit"
Inevitably, surveys by the lage financial institutions are mad up of their client base, rather than the uk population as a whole.

Where I live, the 'average' person probably carries considerably more than that just in their wallets
Unfortunately most of the retailers in these parts think we can all afford to pay the 'Wilmsow Surcharge'
Sometimes I just wish I was a bit more average

Some pensioners have quite a lot stashed away, probably more than most working age people.
I don't see the point of having savings and a mortgage. If we had £30k, we could pay the mortgage off an buy a new car.
