losing a stone will running help
I need to lose a stone i have cut all the rubbish out of my diet and am now eating a lot healthly. Up to this week i wasnt doing any exercise but now i have taken up running.
Will running help me lose weight. How many times a week should i do this and how long should i try and run for.
I have also bought so weights should i be doing both or will the running be enough for me. Has anyone lost weight just by running.
thanks

last time I was running I put on weight - mind you I was running a chip shop
seriously tho, I would imagine running will help - I did similar but instead of running I did cycling - feels like more of my body is getting a workout. I imagine the healthier eating would have the most benefit but getting your heart rate up is no bad thing too!
I would definitely get advice about weights tho - there is a lot to it and different methods depending on what you are aiming for, i.e., toning or muscles or definition etc....but I am no expert

Ha, how vague is this question.
OK, from the top, it depends how fit you already are. How far can you run without being out of breath in a single session, remember, the trick to running is breathing exercises (obviously once the muscles are in shape) If you struggle to run 500yds youre either very unfit or running too fast.
As a starter to running, Id recommend picking out a 2 miles stretch and doing 10 seconds running, 10 seconds walking, 10 seconds running and so on for 1 week(every night). 2nd week, 20 seconds running, 20 seconds walking for a week, 3rd week 30 seconds running, 30 seconds walking, 30 seconds running.... You get the picture. See how that builds up your strength/stamina. Forget about weight, worry about fitness first and foremost.
If youre unfit or not exercised in a while please make sure you stretch your calfs and thighs/hamstrings. You will regret it otherwise, and buy some proper running trainers. Theyre not expensive but will save your feet/legs in the long run.
Running is probably the best way of losing weight other than swimming from my experience, the best thing about running is you can take a proper time out and listen to music at the same time. The trick to distance running IMO is controlled breathing, concentrate on that and you'll go further than just running and thinking oh god Im fcuked when should I stop
Good luck

Yes, that'll work.
Try to exercise three times a week for about half an hour at a time. Running is good (walk if you can't !), cycling, swimming etc. Also, go for a walk at lunchtime, use the stairs instead of the lift, etc.
You get the drift. You'll feel much more energetic after a few weeks (but will have damned sore legs in the first week ! )

As for weights, It doesnt burn that much fat in the right places tbh unless your on rowing machines etc. Off course it does, just hav to be ALOT more dedicated. Anyway, there are people like SJ_Skyline and Matteeboy who are more dedicated to their running than I so I'll hush for now

Picking up on a light hearted point above, do watch for injuries if you're not used to running. You will be adding extra stress and strain on joints. Maybe do some exercise on a cross trainer, bit more fat burning than a bike and less impact on the joints. Fast walking would give youmuch of the benefit and less of the chance of hurting something. And plenty of sex lol.

Nooo, excersise is the worst thing you can do, it will promote muscle growth and muscle is denser than fat so you could end up putting weight on!! Just stop eating crap and try to keep any kind of movement of physical exersion to an absolute minimum.
Alternatively don't get hung up on weight and look at improving your general fitness and look at loosing body fat, which means good aerobic excersise, be that running, swimming, cycling or the gym. Weight is a poor measure of health, most body builders would be considered obese using the BMI system.

The advice about running shoes is good too... When I reintroduced outside jogging to my regime, I got bad shin splint pains... Bought a bouncey pair of asics and do 2 x 7k a week and never even get a twinge
I like to go at a steady pace for the first 3/4 of the run, then for 3/4 of the last mile, up the pace from a jog to a run and for the last 1/4 up from a run to a sprint before cooling down and walking about 1/4 mile back to the house...
Warming up and cooling down is important and you will lose fat and feel better about yourself...
Good to set targets too, maybe aim to do a 5k fun run type event...

davegtt's advice is the best for running, do interval trainingm, short sprints, relaxed running, short sprints, relaxed running etc, that makes the body work at its most efficient. You dont need to go flat out on the sprints though as ideally you want to work at about 70% of max heart rate for the most efficient way of burning fat, any higher and you start to use your muscle stores and not fat stores. Depending on your size it will drop rapidly at first and you will lose inches, then the weight loss will slow down

I once knew a guy who liked a bit of beastiality and necrophilia.
Last I heard he gave them both up as he realised he was flogging a dead horse.

All technically correct of course, but I would tend to think that when the OP said he wanted to lose "weight", he really meant "lose fat", so jogging would be just the job.
In any case, unless you do weights at the gym too, a big lad would lose weight overall by running as they'd lose far more fat compared with the muscle they gain, regardless of the relative density of the two.
