Identity Theft - Some people deserve it really
When I got in from my nightshift this morning I decided not to disturb the missuse and 8wk old lad, and instead cooked a brekkie, had a cuppa, watched some news then hit the 'net. My usual forums were very quiet so after setting a movie D/L'ing for tonights viewing at w*rk I had a play with a P2P app I have. I could not believe the ease at which I found some extremely personal and financially delicate information, and within minutes I had accessed several email accounts, FaceBook, eBay, a few forums, and even PayPal. One person had a word doc which gave the details of an investment protfolio which had $47k sat there, and I had full access Another doc contained every detail about a guys finances, right down to credit card iss/exp dates and security code numbers on the sig strip Like a kid in a sweet shop I dug around for half an hour before deleting it all and logging off. I'm clever enough to know that I aren't clever enough to use any of this info, I just wouldn't know where to start hiding my tracks on the web, but there's plenty out there that can/do/are, daily, for gain.
I don't think most on here would be quite so stupid, but please folks, if you have such details stored, encrypt it, hide it, call it obscure names, install PC security, whatever necessary. Don't be a sitting duck.
PS. I did one naughty thing I hope Marie in Sacremento enjoys the Jean-Claude Van-Damme films from Blockbuster

P2P or peer to peer. Most of it asks you to share "bits" of your hard drive.
If you don't know what you are doing, it's easy to end up sharing a whole lot more than you intended, such as all of C:\ or D:\ etc....

As vindaloo says, any P2P app would probably do the same, but I was using Limewire. Very easy to see into people private lives and acquire a lot of info and even pictures etc. Last week I got a girls CV, some job app letters and some private pics she'd done with the boyfriend and of herself in a mirror. I considered printing them off and posting them to all her neighbours for a laugh, but then I looked at her date of birth and some of the images may have been taken earlier than was decent so deleted them. Quite local too, in Wigan.

I use SoulSeek but only share my "My Music" folder. LimeWire etc is popular amongst the young teens i.e. the myspace/bebo crowd and I guess it's possible that they are installing it on the family PC without their parents knowledge.
