Dakar Rally cancelled for security reasons
Reuters
LISBON (Reuters) - The Dakar Rally was called off on Friday due to security concerns in Mauritania where eight of the race's 15 stages were expected to take place, organisers said.
The 6,000 km rally had been due to start on Saturday from Lisbon.
Four French tourists were killed in Mauritania last month and France warned Dakar organisers on Thursday that "the terrorist risk" could not be ruled out.
The race, originally known as the Paris-Dakar, has been held uninterrupted since 1979.

I've never watched it.... never noticed who won it.... but would consider watching it if there was now a chance of people (especially French) being shot at.... not unlike those pesky sandpeople shooting at the pod racers in Episode I of Star Wars

Make it more interesting, armour the vehicles, mount machine guns, missiles and lasers on them and call it
'Dakar Death Race 2000'
or something

This sucks, start of the sporting year in our house. Only found out this morning turning on Eurosport ready to watch some fun and, NIL
Big factory teams not so bad, but the small privateers, they will be heart broken. All that sponsorship money, most of it will already be spent. Will they have to pay it back YIKES

Big shame it`s been cancelled as there was a Forrester entered this year.
Watching the program on Eurosport last night about thr cancelation. The big teams did not really seem to care but the privateers were gutted. Most of them got loans to enter or beg for sponsorship which they may now have to pay back.
Not sure if we`ll ever see a Dakar again.

They say that the future of the Dakar is not in danger. Have to hope things settle down next year.
Its one of life's adventures and we can't afford to lose events like that.

I didn't go into town today, I wonder what's happened to all the vehicles parked up? I guess they'd have had to shift their asses somewhere else, they were using up prime parking spots.
Peeing down with rain for the last few days anyway.
