Although I'm no expert, Mexican silver is more pure than Sterling silver, so in that respect it would be a better silver, much the same as 24/18 ct gold is better than 9. However, as it is more pure, it will not be as hard wearing as sterling silver. So I guess it would depend on what you want out of your silver.
BTW, I'm sure I've just wasted my time replying.

Lisa - you haven't wasted your time, I thank you for that.
One of my sisters was bragging about 'Mexican Silver' on Boxing Day ... did a search and thought it was a purity thing, but not too sure - wanted the wise on SN to say what they thought (secretly I was hoping that I could go back and say that Sterling Silver was better, seems I can't now!)
Thanks again

Les, I'm no more a Scientist than the next man - I'm an Engineer
Yes, I know Silver is Silver is Silver .... as is Gold is Gold, but that is measured in carats.
I just wanted to know if and why 'Mexican Silver' may be considered better than 'Sterling Silver' it seems it lies in the purity .............. did I tell anyone that, according to Currys, my TV has a purity error??

Yes I noticed your thread about the TV. I hope you will be able to say in court that they are in the habit of selling impure appliances!

What's the three digit number on it?
Mexican silver can be rated as high as .980 (98% pure). Believe it or not, that standard is used mainly for tea strainers. A very small amount of jewellery is also of this high standard but is rare to find. The majority of Mexican jewellery is .925, this is the same standard as Sterling at 92.5% purity (with 7.5% copper added).
Britannia silver is a minimum of 95.84% purity and Minerva silver is 95%.
