No its not crap. If its value for money then B&Q offer it plentiful. I have just rebuilt my house & i can say i spent a considerable amount of time & money in there. I didnt go for any of there flooring but i used there tiles for most of my bathrooms & there bathroom suites were used in all of the en-suite's bar mine.

The laminate flooring is hit and miss:

The cheap stuff is very nasty...i.e cheap and nasty: very thin top protective coat, so chips and scratches easily, base material very cardboard-like so tounge and grooves damage very easily and it soaks up damp like a sponge, causing it to warp and the laminate to peal off.

The more expensive laminates and real wood flooring is much better quality, but you pay alot more too. Worth the extra though.

Depending on the room use, you may have to put quality before budget.

A lot of the stuff B&Q sell is the same as all the other places - some of it is good and some is crap. Cheap laminate floor will always look cheap and tacky, and wont last ( as all the people who have slapped it down in their houses will find out when it needs replacing and wears out ).

Personally I detest laminate flooring - I have yet to see any that looks as good as real wood, or does a convincing impression of it. If you want a wooden floor, fit a wooden one, not chipboard with a picture of wood on it !

Agreed with the two above. Had laminate in my flat 10 years ago. As well as looking cheap I hated the tip-tap noise it made when walking on it.
I'm going for real wood (the 18mm thick stuff) as there's plenty of shades on offer now. I must check if any are in the sales as it is quite expensive - Circa £900 for my lounge (20sq.m) plus another £700 for the conservatory.

20sq/m is a good price, any cheaper at its probably going to be of low quality

I meant my lounge area is 20sq.m!
The price of the flooring is circa £40-£50/sq.m depending on what you go for.

Nick is this solid 18mm Oak stuff, or is the stuff with say an 8mm Oak veneer good?

Gearing up to do my hall, but dreading what I find when I lift the carpet!

Any decently priced supplier reccomendations - other than B&Q? I cant be doing with this £45 sq meter stuff!

You should be able to get decent stuff for about £25/sqm. Costco often has some at this price, but only one to choose from. If you must have a certain shade etc well then you can pay up to £90sq/m

Just had a look in Floors to Go. Engineered Oak (14mm with a 8mm Oak top) was about £20sqm. Could do leveller, underlay, 5 door strips and edging strips all in for £320 on a 4x3m area. Not too bad.

Tried to sell me 'Parawood' and when I enquired about how hard the 'Para' tree was he went silent...! What is Parawood? (and I know my Greek as in ParaCetamol/Medic etc!). Big lack of stats/facts at that place...wary...

D

PS Deep for £90 sqm I'd want the roots and a plot for a holiday home bundled!!!

Heard a few bad things about F2 go actually. Anyway why pay £20sm for engineered when the real stuff can be had for £25sqm, thats how much I paid and I'm happy with it.

I used Kahrs Linea last time I bought a load of wood flooring and it was very good stuff. Not solid wood but real wood. Had a load of it - I think I needed about 45 sq m in all and bought on line at the cheapest place. For me, the thing to do was to narrow it down to brand and colour, then research on teh web for free delivery and price - then you have the best solution...

You cant 'float' a solid wood floor as its too thick and has to be nailed or glued down. These are not options for me unfortunately given the base I have

My brother spent a good amount on wood flooring for his hall. It has picked up and looks crap.

He now wishes he'd have got quickstep laminate like I have.

I'd not put B&Q bathroom stuff in my house, unless I was renting it, our it was a FTB.

What is Karndean exactly? Looking at my mate's hallway tonight he described it as "solid wood Karndean finished in burnt Ginger". It did look good and feel real and solid unlike laminate. Can someone explain what this is made up of please.

In general B&Q are over priced for what you get. If you look around at the sorts of places that the trade will use, Travis Perkins, Buildbase and local suppliers, you'll generally find stuff more competetively priced. I don't mind picking up the odd bag of sand, plaster or copper piping on B&Q if I have run out on a Sunday a need some to complete a job, but in general I won't buy much else.

I did make the mistake of buying floor tiles for the kitchen from B&Q thinking I had found a bargain and compared to the decent stuff I bought for the bathrooms, I really wish I had spent the extra.

I though Karndean was vinyl planks. Look can be very effective but its still posh lino and not that cheap D

I bought laminate flooring for my kitchen from B&Q and have been very happy with it. I can't remember what actual make it was, it's the stuff that "clicks" together and looks like tiles rather than wooden strips.

It gets a lot of use and it's been down 4 years now and it hasn't lifted or moved at all. Very pleased with it.

I bought a packet of that parawood to make a shelf for an oak console I was turning into a TV stand.

The end result was good, but what a job getting it right. It is UTTER SH!TE, you peel away the top 3 full length board from the pack, and the rest below is all bits and pieces about a foot long.

Avoid!
