Ways to get decent sound out of a LCD TV.
Wife's getting me a 32" Toshiba regza for xmas.
Now, its an HD TV so whats the best way to get " almost " HD quality from our existing DVD's? Upscaling DVD player? And if so, does anyone do one, with a 5.1 surround system, suitable for a bedroom? ie small speakers?
I want to hit the shops this afternoon!
Cheers all.

Samsung HD870 up-scaling DVD-player is a good bet
I'm in the same boat having recently got a 32" Samsung LCD TV, and want to get the most out of it. Reviews have been very positive for the HD870, and its previous incarnations the 850 and 860.
Also a decent price too - about £70 in the shops. Remember to get a decent HDMI cable with it too - I suppose if you go to somewhere like Richer Sounds you might be able to see the different cables in action.
Let us know how you get on

I was under the impression that these TVs had their own upscaler chips? And this one can upscale from DVDs, for example, and downscale from 1080p signals.
See DVD Times - Toshiba REGZA 32C3030D - 32" LCD HDTV and go read the av forums. I'd try out what you have before you go buying loads of other new stuff you may not need. (Unless you just want new toys .... )

Cheap DVD upscalers are a waste of money, it has to have a better upscaler than your TV to be any good, at 70 quid it won't.
As for the cable, don't think price makes much difference unless you need a very long one. A cheap one will be fine if it's only a metre or so.

Ideally you need to compare different models however to see which really look the best.

You get what you pay for and 70 quid does not get you much.

I have a Panasonic SC-PT850 which upscales, it's pretty good but you have to set your expectations, upscaling will never match a proper HD DVD player (also bought a Samsung 46" lcd 1080p telly which does help make the picture look fanstastic).
I went for an upscaling player as like you I want to watch DVD's I already have, but will at some point ditch it for a proper HD DVD player and start buying DVD's over again.
I havent rewatched any of my existing DVD's in a while so am starting to think Id have been better off getting a Toshiba HD DVD player and not bothering with my current DVD collection (not very big anyway), as you get 7 HD DVD's included with it, might be an option for you.

Amazon are doing the Samsung HD870 for only £48 inc P&P! £22 less than the high street, and £8 less than the next cheapest I can find online!
Amazon.co.uk: Samsung DVD-HD870 - Region 2 - DVD Player With HDMI and Upscaling to 1080i: Electronics & Photo
(They're easy to region-hack too)

I have a Pansonic DMR-E227 recorder: Does the job. It's an improvement over RGB scart - that's a certainty.
Jury is out on Y Pb Pr component though - which will be down to the existing player and TV your comparing against. In my case it's an old Yelo player which was a decent quality player and has component outputs, which took some beating imo.
Eiether way, the beauty of the Pansonic player is it does have a freeview tuner and can record onto RAM discs, and have a easy to use remote control...somthing that many players do not have.
Obviously for audio perfection, an AV amp is called for. You can get an AV-amp DVD player combo, but being honest if you want something that sounds nice, the combo units I've sampled don't tick my boxes in audio taste. Handy if your short on space though. And most combo unit come with tiny albeit tinny speakers which are heavily reliant on the subwoofer - I've actually had better sound from just using the TV panel speakers and adding a subwoofer - negating the need for a surround system. Horses for courses.

Would deffo recommend a PS3 as a DVD upscaler.
IIRC Toshiba do a subwoofer specifically for their LCD TV's - about £150 I think.

I have a Samsung LCD TV
Samsung HDMI DVD
NAD amp with "video" input (only red/white phono, not a dedicated AV amp)
NAD CD
two B&W 601 speakers
and a Creative Labs speaker/sub/amp combo.
Would like to rig them all up together so I can have audio CDs via 2 speakers (B&W) and films via 5 speakers (4+sub).
Anyone care to help?
