Ground Zero
Went to New York last weekend and took a trip down to see ground zero. I was so surprised to see it was still a massive building site and in parts you could actually see where the concrete was ripped apart.
It was strange to be standing there where all those thousands of people died, it didn't feel like it, just like any other building site.

Why for discussing the fact that a building site is still a building site 6+ years on from the wreckage. Nothing heartless there I reckon. Maybe jods is a fat lazy america

Looks the same from when I went in 02
I guess the foundation work is a mammoth task to complete though, and im sure once finished the new buildings will be up in no time

Hey, there's nowt wrong with Burger King.
Was surprised that the Yanks hadn't got it sorted already, they seem pretty efficient when it comes to things like this i thought.

Santas Elf was spot on. I went to G.Z and found it very upsetting indeed, thousands of names listed and the photo's were potent reminders of that awful day.
I certainly didn't go and stuff a burger down my gob and take snapshots like it was just something else to tick on my to do list!!
I went to the irish bar down the road instead and launched a few Sam Adams down and tucked into some Prime Ribs - Much better.

Was a good program on a few weeks ago, the towers were actually built in a 'bath tub' type arrangement to prevent the Hudson from flooding into it. It got a little damaged in the attacks but I suspect that they've been working on that for a long while.

So taking a photo of ground zero as a point of interest is disrespectful then is it? God help all those people who filmed it when the buildings collapsed and you watched on telly. Bet you wasnt complaining about the coverage when you saw it all unfold.

I have to say I was one of those people who were there taking photos of the wreckage whilst it was still on fire

I took a photo of the memorial wall and I really didn't enjoy being there. It felt eerie knowing what had happened (I don't even like seeing the repeats of the 'by the minute' news on tv either). It was strange as there was also a bunch of school kids visiting too and they obviously didn't seem to care about what had happened since they were screaming and throwing things around - a little disrespectful IMHO

To be fair, I have two days worth of News on videotape - not that I'd be interested in watching now, in all honesty.

There's an episode of Penn & Teller: Bullsh1t! that focuses on the delay of the rebuilding in Ground Zero. If I recall it's basically feet being dragged on what should/should not be built there.

I wont go down there... I did once to pay my respects and it was disturbing.
There was also a long time after it happened when you could see directly into the open site from the A train and from the PATH train on the way past.... that wasnt particuarly nice either.
I agree- its been an open grave for far too long and needs to be rebuilt ASAP. Its not laziness...its been legal wrangling and petty arguing thats stopped it.
They also recently found some more human remains on the roof of the now empty deutsche banke building after all this time..... nasty.
here is what is currently planned for it- the footprints of the original towers left there, and a big memorial IIRC underground..

not much different to when i was there in may,got talking to a local apparently it took ages to decide on replacement buildings and the debris still contains very small human remains that all require dna testing,so removal is a very slow process.
reference previous posts slating people for going to see ground zero and taking photos. new yorkers i met want tourists to see the destruction caused first hand after all they have tour guides that take you there give you a talk about the days events and show you the best photo taking spot.plus they make a shed load of $'s out of it.

I think at some point someone is going to ask WTF they are doing. The site has not changed now for 4 years. I have been twice and its just the same, with modern construction methods that site should be done and dusted. They really should get on with it now but it seems to me like they are leaving it like that.
