I am sure you will get dozens of other names but Ben Collins has to be a good candidate. Read page 5 (point 37) where he is referred to;

Ben Collins as far as I know. The guy I sit next to at work has a very good mate who is chief mechanic for the 007 Aston GT Car. When they had it on top gear going round the track, Stig wasn't allowed to drive it.

I heard that the original stig was Stig Blomquist the ex WRC driver it's a no brainer really given the name!!

When I had my car setup at Plans Motorsport - they are on the same complex and use the track I asked that question and was told its a rota of three drivers. Also said Clarkson is md of a vehicle promotions company so his reviews can be a bit biased if the said maker is a client as well !
