'Formal' dress code!

'Formal' dress code!
Hey guys
Got an invite to a birthday party on Friday night that i completely forgot about!!! And i have nothing to wear (i sound like a woman i know!)
So just read the invite and it says, dress code - Formal. Now what does this exactly mean? Am i expected to turn up in a suit or will a shirt do?
Have tomorrow off work so i can go buy something as my wardrobe contents are getting a little old and tatty now (yes i am a tight 22 year old)! So can anyone recommend anything they've seen lately!
Cheers

Formal to mean is a whistle & flute (suit, shirt, tie...)
I've a black tie do soon and need a new monkey suit, can't decide whether to buy or rent

Id assume that 'formal' meant a suit yes; you might get away without a tie of course. This wouldnt be a problem for me because I (used to) collect suits, but not everyone likes wearing one, so you probably wont be alone if you dont..... If you really arent sure then Id advise you to call the host and establish exactly what they intended. You could also speak to other people who are going and see what theyre planning on wearing.

Nooo. They call to establish that they wont be wearing the same frock; youre calling to see that you are wearing what theyre wearing!

I bought a decent evening suit from a well known and overpriced shop (during their sale) for £200. It should last for ever, thats got to be cheaper; unless your getting fatter Gene?

My last DJ lasted 10 years, it's looking tatty now and needs updating... I'd be looking in the £200 - £450 range, nothing more than that though as you may as well rent!
DCI Gene Hunt... a little older and a little wider than last year
