Default Odd Question can anyone answer it?

Does anyone know how to calculate the thinnest part of England?
I.E. the shortest distance between the east coast and the west?
England only if possible, does anyone know how to calculate it?
cheers in advance,
astraboy.

I'd have a guess at somewhere like Silloth to Cleadon in Sunderland - about 96 miles

Probably somewhere down near "the foot", i.e. "The Lizard".

Wasn't Hadrian's Wall built across the narrowest part of England (I think it is approx 73 miles long?).

Probably not the most accurate guide but that's the area to work it out with?

Hadrian’s Wall: the final frontier. Commissioned by the Emperor Hadrian in AD 122, this structure marks the northernmost extent of the great Roman Empire.

It’s more than 73 miles long, stretching across the narrowest part of northern England, and took the Roman army nearly six years to build
Not sure if that means there's a thinner bit down south, but I'd doubt it

Can't think how to calculate it, I would have thought it would have to be done by measurement. Not as easy to do as you might think I reckon.

It will be interesting to know where and how much in the end though.

And when you've done it you can make the necessary mathematical adjustments (multiply the result by 1.0833 I think) to correct the number of yards you've measured.

39" is a metre. 36" is a yard - 3 feet at 12" per foot, you see...

Get google earth and you can draw a line anywhere in the world and it'll tell you the distance.

This site might come in handy:

Gmaps Pedometer

Annoyingly it loads you into the USA - but just drag the map across and zoom into wherever you want.

To measure a route click on "Start Recording" then double click the start point and every turning along the way.

If you're on a health kick you can get a rough idea of calories burned as well.

Nope, How wide is the coast across from "the lizard". About 5 miles, I'd guess.

Who phrased the question? Is this from a pub quiz handbook? What are the rules on defining the narrowest point?

Vindaloo, I know what you mean, but I don't think any point of the lizard will ever be defined as being on the "east coast", no matter which way you look at it.
