Poppy Appeal - a new way to support it this year
A great friend of mine is heavily involved with the appeal and forwarded me the mail below, knowing what a patriotic and generous bunch you all are, please take a min or two to read below ...........
Please Remember The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and help put it in the pop charts
Please Remember, this crucial charity not only helps support our war veterans - but also the brave young people currently fighting for our country.
The Remembrance period is the one time in the year when the nation focuses on the sacrifices of the brave men and women who represent us...
Lives are on the line for pitiful recompense, often as little as £2.50 an hour. If people are injured, financial compensation can be woefully small and inappropriate. The charity needs your help to provide for those who are suffering - the neglected people who deserve so much better, both young and old veterans.
Support the appeal and the armed forces by buying the traditional Poppy or / and buying the official Poppy Appeal track "Please Remember" by Tori White (On the 10th November Tori will perform the song on The Festival of Remembrance on BBC TV)
To buy the download, click the following link:
Tori White - Please Remember
(The download only costs 79p)
Or to buy the CD, either click on the following link
HMV.com: singles: Please Remember (2007)
Or call the following telephone number 020 7467 1109 and choose option 1, or go into any good record store.
To download the song to your mobile, please text the word Tori to 80996
Every purchase of the song will donate at least 50p to The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
Remember, that the more purchases made, create a higher chart position, more radio airplay and therefore more income to those that need it.
'Please Remember' our forgotten heroes - support The Poppy Appeal 2007.
Pass this email on to as many of your friends and colleagues as you can - let's make Tori number 1 and show our support for our fellow countrymen abroad.
Donate and download it now !

(Please bttt to keep it prominent - any chance of a sticky thread webbie ?)

I've worked in a lab or an office for all my working life and have nothing but admiration for people in the current armed forces. Regardless of the politics that takes them to war zones, they knew when they signed up that there was always the possibility and they could be away from their families, at risk of death and I can't begin to imagine what this is like.
I'm also always moved me by the thought of the veterans from previous wars and and conflicts, who signed up to do their bit (or perhaps didn't make the choice) and were shipped all round the world to fight truly bloody battles in awful conditions.
The fact that these veterans fought for their country in what are to me unimaginably horrific ways and some of them now rely on charity for financial support is an absolute tragedy.
The poppy appeal deserves all the support it gets and a whole lot more.

I must have put at least £20 in the poppy appeal coffers at asda, its the one charity actually give a **** about.
It makes me so proud seeing a ww2 veteran standing there all day for nowt after saving this Country.
Yet ashamed at what this Country has become

Good to sse the support for the members of the forces, they deserve it of course and we must not forget all those who get such awful injuries and are never mentioned but who have to fight for the smallest support from the authorities.
Mrs Leslie does her bit by going out and selling poppies in the local town.

I'm going to bump this out of a bit of blatent self-interest.
Please make a donation, however small, and wear a poppy. Also, even if its the only time you step inside a church all year, please try and make the effort to attend a rememberance service.
People are often made aware of those who are killed whilst serving their country on operations, whilst very little mention is made of the many more who return from operations having been wounded, some of which will never be able to return to a 'normal' life again.
November 11th is a particulary promenant date for me this year as it is the first anniversary of the deaths of two colleagues who were serving in Basrah while I was deployed to Southern Afghanistan.

I have just visited the National Memorial nr Lichfield, escorting the family of one of my soldiers killed in Iraq. He was 20 and his widow is 19, they have a son.
There is a gap in the wall and on the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month the sun will fall on the wreath in the centre.
It's a stunning example of the generosity of the British and Commonwealth public, not a cent of Government money was used, all donations. How sad it was to see the politicians fawning at the opening ceremony.
But it's not just Military, the Fire Service, Ambulance Service and many civilian agencies are represented. The RBL are one of the main forces behind it and should be supported in any way possible.

I take time out every year to collect, I stand in my town centre and it is very touching who will donate.
Last year a down and out drunk stopped (nearly fell over), dug around in his pocket found a pound and put it in my collection box. He then told me his granddad died in WW2 and went on his way. Coud be complete rubish but didnt look like it to me.
If you have kids the time it touches me most is when parents get them poppies or they put the money in and I pin one on them.
We should never ever forget those who gave their tomorrow for our today.

Talked to a WW2 veteran in Asda last week, he was in France during the liberation as was my Grandad. My Grandad died 8 years ago but received cards and letters from the French village he was in during that time right up to his passing. His job was a bomb disposal and booby trap removal, he told me loads of stories some good, some moving and some bloody and sad. His best mate was blown up just yards away and my Grandad was covered in his internal organs and blood.
I left the chap in Asda with my usuall £40 donation and was pleased to see they now do a range of poppy's, car stickers, tax disc holdes etc. etc.
Please give what you can even if its small change, many of us on here work hard but have good lives and we should never forget why.
Have a look at Poppy - Poppy Home Page
Cheers

Going to make this sticky for a while. Something I did this year was set up a DD to the British Legion, rather than just stick a tenner in a collection box. At least you can start to make a bit of a difference and your donations will qualify for gift aid tax relief too.

Over 17,000 people have signed up to this so far and some of you may be interested:
Petition to: create a new public holiday, the National Remembrance Holiday to commemorate The Fallen and our Nation, with the holiday falling on the second Monday in November each year, the day after Remembrance Sunday.
It only takes a minute or two and it has gone from nothing to number 10 in the "hit parade" of Downing Street petitions in about 3 weeks so tell your friends too if you support it!
And in the meantime, keep digging in your pockets for the Poppy Appeal. We all, I hope, stop and remember on 11 November, but the Royal British Legion's work goes on 365 days a year and as it will be 366 next year, they need a bit more!
