Default Buying a pre-reg car new

Anyone done this?
Looking at a new Landy Defender XS and a company in Warwick (200 miles away but easy by train!) buys them from dealers abroad (full UK spec, RHD, warranty, etc), pre registers them then hands over ownership to the buyer.
The saving is around £3k on list and they sell an awful lot of them.

The other alternative is to buy the ex demo model we drove (2k miles, approx £3k off list) from our local dealer.

Anyone looking at one of these - test drive one now. They are a HUGE improvement on the old Td5 model

Yup, Although mine was direct from Mitsubishi UK to the franchised dealer.

Decided what I wanted, spoke to a dealer who could get me one.

Delivery miles(<10), saved a fortune

£3k doesn't sound a massive saving, how much is the car new?

Paul - about £27k with the options we want (not many - the XS comes very well equipped - for a Defender!).
Not sure if it's worth the effort or not.

Depends what deal you can arrange at a UK dealer I guess.

Very hard to get anything off list for a Defender.
We've got about £500 off a brand new one from the dealer or £3k off the demo model we tested which can be "released early" if we want it.

A rare vehicle that's very much in demand, especially with the new engine, interior and gearbox. They also hardly depreciate which will make a change to our other car - An 05 reg Astra (bought new) which is now worth about 67p.

It's a tricky one but we are prepared to wait for the right deal.

I would go for the ex demo, its just the thought of buying a car at that price from an importer dealers, 2k miles is nothing and if you can get the same or slightly better price then it's where I would be.

Matt,

Maybe a daft question, but have you phoned around a few LR dealers up and down the country for comparative prices?

I'd phone about - there are a few dealers in Scotland, for example, who are more likely to give you a better deal due to lower demand.

Can't say for sure, of course, but I suspect they would be quite happy to trailer a Defender down to you to get the sale.

I bought my EVO from a main dealership a couple of years ago as a pre-reg. the car had 4 miles on the clock when I took ownership and saved nearly £2k on the list price. If your not fussed on the reg no and the fact that the V5 will show a previous recorded keeper then go for the pre-reg (as long as its to the spec you want) A demo motor may well have been demonstrated 'off road'

Cheers
Rob
