Question Anyone have an Au Pair?

Our eldest starts school in January and we're thinking of getting an Au Pair to help with the school run and some of the domestics.

Does anyone on here have one? Any experiences (good or bad) to share, agency recommendations etc?

Gary.

Friends of mine used an agency for their Au Pair as they thought the vetting process the agency did on its staff would make for a better Au Pair.

WRONG!

After 3 agency Au Pairs in as many months they did their own interviews/vetting and found their own Au Pair.

I've seen her a few times and OMG she's an East European STUNNER
She sunbaths in just a tiny thong bikini bottom - I was there having drinks with my mate in June and I had permanent wood!

She lives in (so free meals and lodgings) and gets £100 per week cash in hand and £100 per week sent back home to her parents (done monthly)
For that, she does the school run twice a day (2 boys 6yrs & 8 yrs) and 4hrs of house work a day with weekends off. School hols she looks after the kids full time Mon - Fri.

I'd happily pay her £200 a week just to live in my house!!!
The wife doesn't agree with me though

200 a week is a lot for an au pair most get 70-100. A STUNNING girl who worked for me part time was an au pai and she got 100 per week plus use of a car to drive the kids around and played witht eh baby and cleaned all day untill 6 pm. She was chosen by the wife but in the end it diddn't work out as for any woman having a stunning extremely charismatic beautiful woman in your house can make you feel very insecure. So if you get one interview loads until you find one you are both very happy with and pick an ugly one.

£200 a week is nothing for my friends...

And <name I can't pronounce or spell> is worth every single penny she earns.
She would put her life before the 2 boys and thats something money can't buy!

Does the minimum wage not apply to au pairs? Or do you claim that her rent is deducted at source and is something daft like £1000 per month?

So you think

Some people think £20k / £50k /£100k for a car is expensive, some don't, it depends on your budget!

Only a fool would cut down on quality to save a few quid on an Au Pair - Its your kids lifes FFS!

And I suppose you put remould tyres on you car as the bigger brand tyres are expensive ! ! !

Friend has one and he thinks the figures work out well.

He pays her something like £90 per week plus bed and board. That is over the industry average. She also gets the use of a car.

He has 2 kids and would be paying nursery fees around £1200 a month.

The last one had to go after a LAAAARGE phone bill to her home country came in, however he claimed that back from the agency.

Generally he is very happy with the arrangement

Thanks for the replies. We're still deliberating what to do!

Their pay is classed as pocket money as long as it's a sensible amount (£70ish a week). The Au Pair is treated as a family member, so it's not classed as paid employment.

Go Eastern European - they work hard.

Get a bloke not a girl - really! I know 3 people who have had male au pairs all aged around 22-23 post university. They are brilliant with the kinds especially boys - JUST DON'T GO THERE!! OK? I'm talking football, bikes, swimming, etc.. These are straight guys who simply want to work. One bloke came over withh is girlfriend and the pair worked for 3 years to make enough money to buy their won home back in Poland - he was the au pair and she worked for a local tea shop.

Make sure you set the rules including telephone usage, though!

Good luck!

Can you really get an Au Pair/ live in cleaner/ general dogsbody this cheap? I pay more than this for a cleaner and someone to do the ironing. We thought about it, but were reckoning on minimum wage * 16 hours a day * 5 days a week, so 400 quid a week minimum. Wouldn't mind paying someone 100 a week to hang round and do all the crap I detest

Dont do it, you'll end up bonking the au pair and break your marriage up. Or she'll turn out to be a lesbian and your wife will run off with her and break your marriage up. Either way youre doomed!
