Race numbers
#1
Why is it that when I see race cars in non-competing environments (track days, road, etc) that the race number is generally crossed out with a piece of insulating tape?

Hi All,
The numbers are crossed out because it is illegal to use them on public highways whilst not competing.
Lights are taped over so that in the event of an accident, the glass stays (roughly) together.
Cheers

Numbers are taped over as its illegal to have a door square and number on the road unless the vehicle is in a competition - ie road section between rally stages...if you're driving after an event then out comes the insulation tape..
IIRC - headlamps are taped incase of an off where it will keep the glass from hitting the track and troubling other competitors

Bizarre -- can't think what that law would be for.
It took me a long time to realize that a yellow square with a black 'X' through it on the back of a racing car means 'novice'.
Headlights taped over is to stop bits of glass ending up all over the track in the event of a shunt.

Wow! Quick replys.
Dela - what does the law state?
Reason I'm interested, a firm of expensive W. London estate agents near me has just put a fleet of new Minis on the road, each painted BRG with yellow, white & green union jacks on the roof, combined with fake GB type logos indicating their branch (CHW - Chiswick, FUL - Fulham, etc). Each car has a number in a roundel on the side.
Could I make a fortune by grassing them to Crimestoppers?

Can someone point me to a reference to this law please? Given that I live in a community full of media types (including head of communications for the Beeb!) I intend going global with this!!! ;-)

Sorry to disagree but i'm pretty sure it's not illegal to have race numbers on a car on the road. I remember reading an article about having race numbers on motorbikes on the road and it turned out it was legal after all. I can't remember which publication i read it in and could be completely mistaken so apologies if wrong.

As far as I'm aware its purely an MSA regulation - it certainly appears in the blue book. The last para of E11.3.11 says: "Any means of identifying individual cars during a competition MUST be removed at the finish of the event". There are other more specific regs coverinng rallying etc.
