Default The Wifes Car

Hi, just having some trouble with the wifes car.
as she was driving around the Gearbox was making strange noises, i've taken off the bottom cover, found some shards and some metal bits, the main teeth look ok, but i'm not sure about the rest, could it be the other teeth on the gears or could it be the gear select bearings? if anyone has a clue please let us know as i would like to know before i get in the garage so they can't rip me off.

cheers

It would help if we knew what car it is for a start

any metallic debris in the sump of a gearbox is never good news i,m afraid.

As to where the bits come from, unless you do a strip down, you wont know.

and unless you strip it down, you wont know if you've got all the bits out

Lets face it, IT will have to be stripped down to do any work on it..

Depending on the car and the cost of a strip down, then it may be cheaper to buy a new box.

Sounds like a bearing has disintegrated.

My wifes Micra Gearbox did this at Xmas - took the box out in January, got a new bearing put in and some teeth 'dressed'. £75 I seem to remember.

I put it back on with a new clutch and sold the car.

I was offered secondhand gearboxes for £50 .... but, you don't know what you're getting - decided to keep the one I had and have it repaired.

It would be easier, but you will pay through the nose.
At the moment you need to have th fault diagnosed.

The stealer will charge approx £50 per hour to look at it, and then quote for the work needed.

budget £500 from a stealer

price up the cost of a recon/ SH box £200?

fitting at an independant garage £150

saving £150 ish, and dont quote me either

a good independent gets my vote. Use someone whom you trust. Unless of course you have found a magical dealer who is both good and reasonably priced...there are some out there!
