help me im moving into my first place what have i got to do.
I m moving into my first place with a mate in 2 weeks, we have rented a new apartment in our local town. So what happens now lol who do i need to inform ive thought of the following so far.
Some one has live in there before us.
Bt = Do i wait till i move in and tell them or can i inform them now.
Sky = Can i arrange this now or do i need to wait till i get a phone number from bt.
Council Tax = When do i need to tell these can i get away with this for a bit lol.
Electric and water bills = Do i see who he has been using then just change them over or get someone fresh.
Change of address to
banks
work
dvla
phone company
Any help will be good
thanks

On the day you move in make sure that YOU take the meter readings for gas/electricity/water, the agency should do this, but they can be crap and get it wrong. Don't end up paying for someone elses useage.

Dont assume you can get sky, some appartments and flats dont allow you to have them. Depending on the building they may have a communal one that you can join in their scheme for.

Another good tip - get all the bills put in your joint names with your mate, rather than you have the BT, him having the Electric etc...
This way both of you are liable for the bills, otherwise one of you can end up paying the phone bill, then having to chase the other for money for their share.
Having shared in the past, what I would say is sort everything out with your mate regarding money before moving in - work out exactly what each of you are going to be paying, if you are going to set up direct debits or pay by cheque, who will do the cleaning, cooking, shopping - both knowing where you stand can save a lot of arguments in the future where one person feels the other isnt pulling their weight.
As you are moving into a flat, check the lease carefully as flats can have a lot of restrictions on what you can and cant do in them. I would also check the maintenance contract for the flats to see who will pay for any work that needs doing as some dodgy landlords try and pass this on to the tenents.
Last thing, and probably the most important to do as soon as you move in - get contents insurance sorted out just in case the worst happens.

mine had a communal dish on the roof with every apartment wired up, not sure how you get the paid for content as i junked the skybox, and just used freeview.

said person then paid for 1 year, and is now waiting another 1.5 years for another visit till he pays again LOL
after 2/3 months you start getting the same letters you got in the beginning LOL
sometimes they have different names signed on them, but the names seam to cycle as well one of them must have had so many promotions and demotions

He's definitely not a B.S'er, very clued up about what he can get away with in terms of paying for things, including tax! Can't remember what he said, but I don't think you're obliged to let the inspectors in or something.
