OK, looked at numerous websites and some say personal electronic items must no go in checked luggage and others suggest that you can't take it in hand luggage.
Can anybody say definitively what can be taken and how?
Flying from Birmingham with First Choice if that helps!

Well my 20gig archos (basically a laptop hard disc) goes me with me everywhere I go. And I fly out of BHX monthly.
BTW...take your shoes off at security and hold your nose, dump your water and forcibly push past the masses of ramjams that are always in the way
info here at the horses mouth: Birmingham International Airport Security
And take note of drop off facitlities.

My collection of hand luggage when I fly (16 times so far this year )
Cannon EOS 350D
Fuji 6700
Dell Laptop
TomTom
Archos
Ipod
PSP
Blackberry
I like to travel with a few gadgets.....
Anything that transmits is a NO NO, including phones, WiFi (this must be disabled before flight)
Ipods and all the other items are fine after the seatbelt signs are off - enjoy your trip

Wifi should be ok on some of the decent carriers, I flew out with Emirates recently and they have Wifi access on the plane i flew on, i am guessing it wont be long before this filters down to some of the budget carriers.
