They did all the hardwork with the Legacy. Which is almost mechanically identical, drivetrain, suspension. And it was just as successfull in rallying etc.
...Then they made a new bodyshell based on pretty much the same floorpan, suspension, and drivetrain...bingo Impreza. All thanks to the Legacy's legacy.
