Can anyone help - looking to go to Amsterdam with the wife, early Feb. Never been before. Fly from B'ham or Manchester. Recommendations for places to stay/avoid - the brochures are chock full of hotels so any pointers welcome?? Many thanks.

Assume you would like some where nicer than the student dives that are available.
I've stayed at the Hotel Eden before. I think it's a Holiday Inn, so the quality is better than most, the rooms are bigger, nice beds, better facilities, although it will cost a little more.
It's on Amstel and over looks the Amstel canal.
It's about a 20 minute walk from Dam Square or a 5 minute tram ride. It's a lot quieter than some of the hotels on Dam Square or Dam Rack.
The hotel backs on to the Rembrandtplein, which has serval friendly bars, restaurants, McDonalds and Burger King!! It's quite lively at night, but you won't be able to hear it from the hotel.
Tram rides to the Van Goch museum, Ann Frank House, etc are very easy. Most people speak good English.
It's worth getting something like the Rough Guide to Amsterdam available from most book stores and online retailers.
Hope this helps

Could I be a cheeky git and ask you to mail me results if you speak to the guys on the other board?
shark@dial.pipex.com
I've been lurking since this thread started as we're off to Europe in the scooby in march, and Amsterdam is a port of call.
Cheers
David

I worked in Holland for 2 years installing a TV studio there and would suggest if you want to stay somewhere half decent in the centre of Amsterdam then go for any of the more expensive hotels around Dam square - most are top notch and right in the centre of the nightlife.

Try www.timeout.com - the Amsterdam section is very useful. I've lived here well over a year and I still use it to find places to eat etc.
For hotels, try the Renaissance, either Marriot or the American Hotel (art deco place, loads of celebs, but great breakfast too!)
There are a few must-do things in Amsterdam beyond the obvious - I like to take visitors to The Supper Club - most relaxed restaurant you could imagine. One sitting, no choices beyond meat or vegetarian, everyone sprawls out on long white mattresses covered with massive pillows. Food quality varies from good to excellent, you'll be eating 'til midnight and there's a nice little club downstairs if you can cope with dancing. It's got a slightly camp atmosphere (straight and gay toilets rather than male or female!) but it's certainly not a problem. Plus you can smoke whatever you wqnt as long as you're fairly discrete with one of Amsterdam's better coffeeshops directly opposite!
Try www.supperclub.nl - but book a couple of weeks ahead if you're going on a Friday.
Have a great time - feel free to mail me any specific questions.

I have friends from Holland. They speak VERY good English. If you are interested, head along to the forum at €clypse Soldier of Fortune.
This is a gaming forum, and ask to speak to [E]vasion, [E]Razor or [E]zekiel. They are all based in and around the Amsterdam area.
I'll mention that you may be popping by, but will leave it to you whether to actually drop in.
Good luck in your quest.
