Appealing against a parking ticket

Appealing against a parking ticket
Just deciding whether to appeal against a parking ticket and risk it going up from £50 to £100 by not paying now.
It was for parking in a residents zone (where I used to live). I used one of my old visitor vouchers and admittedly it wasn't clearly displayed - hence the ticket. However, I sent it off to the local authority and they said that apart from it not being visible that it was no longer valid.
This is where I believe I may be able to get away with it. Despite the scratch panels only giving a choice of 1999, 2000 and 2001, I wrote 2007 and all the other parts of the date corresponded. How can they say it was no longer valid - surely it would need an expiry date?
Worth appealing or pay up???
