Angry BT Robbing Barstewards!!!

BT billed me with £xx which included a £4:50 penalty for not paying by Direct Debit.

The bill said that if I set up a DD then I would not have to pay the £4:50.

Set up the DD - what do BT do??

Take the £4:50 as well as the bill as it should be!!!!

Foooookin useless cheating barstewards!!!!

Ring them, "OH, ok we will give you a £4:50 Credit"

If they do this 'accidently' to 10 million customers they have just pocketed £45 Million for 3 months!!!!

I HATE BT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

If you are billed quarterly, how come they manage to charge this fee monthly . Gits the lot of them.

well change over to the Post office home phone, it has cheaper line rental then BT, cheaper calls, free calls from PO home phone to PO home phone calls. you get to keep your old number and it takes approx 2 weeks to change over, if you go into your local Post Office. they do it there and than at the counter, it will take to 2min to do oh and they don't charge you for not being on Direct debit
if your prefer to do it on line then quote this reference 194410x

Any company that treats the customer with such contempt deserves to suffer. Stop using them and go somewhere else. If enough people do it only then will they get the message

For someone who claims to be so financially astute - you've been overpaying for ages - how come you didn't set up a DD ages ago when the 'reduction' for paying by DD was introduced?

Why is this not advertised, why are people not changing in their droves?

Why they are not is that broadband requires a BT Line - so we are all fooooked aren't we??

hmmmm. I thought all the other phone providers still required you to pay your BT line rental. The packages they offered were just lower call rates/packages etc.

BT's non-direct debit charge | Ofcom
BT's non-direct debit charge

At present BT customers that pay by direct debit (DD) or Monthly Payment Plan (MPP) receive a discount to their standard tariff. From 1 May 2007 BT will be changing the way that this charge is presented to its customers. The discount will in future be included in the standard rental tariff and instead a charge will be shown on bills for customers that do not make payment using an automated method. BT will also be increasing the charge by 50p a month.

For example, at present a BT customer on the BT Together Option 1 who pays quarterly by DD is billed £36 line rental and receives a £3 DD discount. From 1 May that customer will be billed only £33 for rental. A customer on the same tariff who does not pay by DD is currently billed £36 line rental. From 1 May this customer will be billed the £33 rental charge and £4.50 for the non-DD payment charge (an increase of £1.50 per quarter).

The increased charge will not apply to the Light User Scheme and In-Contact, special tariff schemes provided by BT under the Universal Service Obligation for customers on low-incomes.

Direct debit discounts (or charges for customers not paying by DD) are commonly used by telecoms companies and by companies in other sectors to reflect the lower costs of processing payments by direct debit and reduced debt management costs.

BT has charged customers who pay by direct debit less than customers who pay by other means for several years. However, the increase from May raises an issue of how much it may be reasonable to charge.

Following complaints from consumers, Ofcom has launched an industry wide review of additional charges that are made by communications providers, including the charge made to consumers that do not make payment by direct debit.

Ofcom's review will examine consumers’ awareness of and attitudes to these types of charges. The review will consider whether additional charges are sufficiently transparent, whether the charges or their levels are unfair and what action, if any, is necessary.
it's not a processing fee.
if it was it would be the same whether for a single monthly bill or a single quarterly bill.

is it to reduce debt management costs
possibly but they already charge late payment penalties.
and
We all pay a "bad debt surcharge" to BT for all the unpaid bills the fail to collect.
it's the ammount Ofcom allows BT to add on to the price of each call.

pete people are. if your broad band isn't with BT then there should not be a problem with changing over, all the post office are doing is renting the line off bt, the same why say npower would supply your gas from british gas. oh and the post office is also introducing a broadband package later on in the year

Paying your line rental to other companies has been available for a long time, cutting out BT altogether.
