Sewing Machines
Anyone know anything about what to look for when buying a sewing machine. I have offered to buy one as a present for someone buy haven't a clue what to look for or where to look.
I dont want to buy something which is unreliable and similarly she doesn't need an all singing all dancing bit of kit.
Can anyone recommend a manufacturer and model, and give me some indication of price.
Grateful for your help,
TT

As he said ...
My dad has 3x singer 31-44 or similar and a seiko with a walking foot.
he has done upholstery now for 40+ years and its still the original machine. he bought the other 2 for spares but has never needed to use them! its testament to how good old tools are. only thing needing to be changed was he burnt a motor out. the seiko is a brute, sews material to 1/4inch ply if you need to !! but he never uses it as its a bit ott for day to day work.

She is wanting to do some dressmaking / clothes making and the usual DIY sewing like making curtains / cushion covers etc. It would be advantageous to have a removable foot - whatever that means!!!!
hope to get the best kit available for around the £200 mark, have no idea what to pay for these things are they precision machinery or mass produced pieces of equipment?
All help appreciated.

For scatter cushions??
My one has speed control, air foot pump (much better than electrickery ones)
and reverse speed. Also removable foot....it just pushes on.
Elna 3210....£299.
